Incessant showers in Mumbai and its suburbs have severely disrupted normal life, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city. The heavy downpour led to water stagnation on railway tracks, particularly between Nalasopara and Virar stations on the Western Railway line, causing significant delays and cancellations of suburban train services.
Schools and Colleges Closed
Following the IMD's red alert, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced the closure of all schools and colleges in the city for the day. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the heavy rainfall and waterlogging in several low-lying areas.
Impact on Train Services
The water stagnation on tracks severely affected the Western Railway line, with trains running late by 20-30 minutes. Commuters faced immense hardship as platforms became overcrowded. A Western Railway official stated, "We are working to clear the water from the tracks and restore normal services as soon as possible." The Central Railway line also reported minor delays due to waterlogging at some stations.
IMD Forecast
The IMD has predicted more heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its adjoining areas over the next 24 hours. The red alert indicates the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 200 mm in some places, and advises residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Precautionary Measures
The BMC has deployed pumps to clear water from low-lying areas and advised people to stay away from dangerous structures and flooded roads. The disaster management cell has been put on high alert. Citizens are urged to call the BMC helpline in case of emergencies.
