PGI Sees Storm of Injuries: 15 Critical, 2 Dead

Chandigarh: Despite explicit and timely government alerts advising citizens to stay indoors during a severe thunderstorm on the night of June 11, 2026, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) witnessed an influx of emergency cases, culminating in two fatalities.

Storm-Related Injuries Overwhelm PGI

According to PGI data, 15 patients were rushed to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries directly linked to the storm's fury. Slippery roads and blinding rain proved to be a deadly combination for motorists, as motorcycle-related accidents accounted for the vast majority of trauma admissions. Seven individuals were severely injured after their motorcycles skidded and crashed on the wet asphalt, while another two were involved in major road traffic collisions. One more patient was brought in from a storm-related vehicular accident.

The high-velocity winds caught several others off guard, leading to three critical slip-and-fall incidents. In more freak occurrences caused by the storm, one individual was struck by flying debris and unsecured tin sheets, while another sustained severe electrical burns from a storm-induced electrical hazard.

Types of Injuries Reported

Six patients arrived with critical head injuries, including skull fractures and internal brain hemorrhages, while 11 suffered major orthopedic fractures requiring immediate attention. The casualty list included two cases of severe maxillofacial trauma, alongside instances of blunt chest trauma, blunt abdominal injuries, and a degloving injury. While emergency teams managed to stabilize multiple patients through intensive surgeries and conservative treatments, the storm ultimately claimed two lives.

One of the survivors was on a bike without a helmet and hit an electric pole during the storm.

Expert Commentary

"Weather warnings are not issued as routine announcements. They are based on scientific assessment and are intended to prevent exactly such incidents. When authorities advise people to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, seek shelter, and exercise caution, these instructions should be taken seriously," said Dr. Rajesh Chhabra, neurosurgeon at PGI.
