Pune's Drinking Water Crisis: Sewage Contamination Threatens Major Reservoirs
Pune's drinking water reservoirs contaminated by sewage

The Pune Metropolitan Authority has raised serious concerns about the deteriorating quality of drinking water supplying the city, as major reservoirs face increasing contamination from untreated sewage discharge.

Critical Situation for Pune's Water Sources

Multiple reservoirs that form Pune's lifeline for potable water – including Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar – are receiving substantial amounts of polluted water from nullahs carrying untreated sewage. This contamination poses significant health risks to millions of residents relying on these water bodies.

Alarming Pollution Levels Revealed

Recent assessments show that approximately 146 million liters per day (MLD) of untreated sewage is entering these crucial water bodies. The situation is particularly dire at:

  • Khadakwasla reservoir: Receiving 57.29 MLD of polluted water
  • Panshet reservoir: Contaminated with 27.27 MLD of sewage
  • Varasgaon reservoir: Facing 24.95 MLD of untreated waste
  • Temghar reservoir: Receiving 36.49 MLD of polluted discharge

PMC's Response and Ongoing Projects

The Pune Municipal Corporation has initiated several sewage treatment projects aimed at addressing this environmental emergency. However, the completion timeline extends to 2025-26, leaving the city vulnerable to water contamination in the interim period.

"The contamination of our primary drinking water sources represents one of the most pressing public health challenges facing Pune today," stated a senior PMC official. "While treatment projects are underway, the immediate risk to citizens cannot be overlooked."

Public Health Implications

Health experts warn that contaminated reservoir water can lead to waterborne diseases, including gastrointestinal infections, hepatitis, and other serious illnesses. The situation demands immediate intervention and increased public awareness about water safety measures.

The Metropolitan Authority has emphasized the urgent need for accelerated completion of sewage treatment infrastructure and stricter enforcement against illegal discharge into water bodies feeding these critical reservoirs.
