In a compassionate response to the biting cold wave gripping Lucknow, the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) has established a temporary night shelter for patients and their family members. This initiative directly follows directives from the Uttar Pradesh government to prevent anyone in need from sleeping outdoors during the severe winter conditions.
Shelter Inaugurated with Blanket Distribution
The facility, strategically located at gate number two of the SGPGIMS premises, was officially opened on Monday. The inauguration ceremony saw the institute's director, Prof RK Dhiman, personally distributing blankets to those seeking refuge. Hospital authorities reported a significant immediate need, with nearly 500 individuals utilizing the shelter on its very first day of operation.
Facility Designed for Comfort and Warmth
The shelter has been thoughtfully constructed to offer maximum protection from the harsh elements. It is fully enclosed to shield occupants from cold winds, and carpets have been laid on the floor to provide an additional layer of insulation against the chill. This setup ensures a warmer and safer environment for people who would otherwise have no option but to brave the open cold.
A Lifeline for Families from Distant Districts
Senior officials highlighted the critical need for such a facility. Chief Medical Superintendent, Prof Devendra Gupta, and Officiating Finance Officer, Prakash Singh, explained that the shelter is a major comfort for relatives of patients. Many of these attendants travel from far-off districts and face financial hardship, making it impossible for them to afford paid accommodation near the hospital for extended periods during treatment.
This proactive measure by SGPGIMS, in line with state government orders, underscores a commitment to holistic care, addressing not just medical needs but also the basic human comfort of patients' families during a difficult time.
