Surat Milk Quality Scandal: Multiple Dairy Samples Fail Safety Tests

The food safety department of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has uncovered a significant milk quality issue, with several samples of cow and buffalo milk declared substandard in recent laboratory reports. The findings, announced on Monday, reveal troubling patterns of potential adulteration within the city's dairy supply chain.

Intensified Testing Follows Police Crackdowns

Officials confirmed that the samples were collected approximately 15 days ago from various locations across Surat. This intensified surveillance comes as a direct response to recent police operations targeting counterfeit milk-based product manufacturing. Over the past few months, specialized police units including the state monitoring cell and special operations group have conducted multiple raids on facilities allegedly producing paneer and ghee from non-milk materials.

The SMC has significantly expanded its food testing program following these enforcement actions, aiming to ensure comprehensive safety monitoring throughout the dairy industry.

Laboratory Analysis Reveals Quality Deficiencies

According to the detailed report from the SMC's Public Health Laboratory, seven distinct cow milk samples failed to meet established quality standards. The primary deficiencies identified were insufficient milkfat content and inadequate solids-not-fat (SNF) levels. Both parameters serve as crucial indicators of milk composition and are essential for detecting dilution or adulteration practices.

The affected cow milk samples originated from multiple sources:

  • Shree Nath Milk Dairy on Singanpor Road
  • Shree Krushna Dairy in Bamroli
  • A One Dairy in Unn
  • Maa Chamunda Dairy in Unn
  • Shree Bhagya Lakshmi Dairy in Nanpura
  • S K Patel Dairy at Pandesara
  • A cattle shed near Dharmayug Society in Udhna

Additionally, a buffalo milk sample collected from Radhe Dudh Mandli on Abrama Road was also found substandard for identical reasons: deficient milkfat and SNF content.

Ice Cream Product Also Fails Quality Check

The quality concerns extended beyond liquid milk products. An ice cream sample marketed as Kaju Draksh flavor, obtained from Siddhi Ice Cream at Parle Point, also failed laboratory testing. Analysis revealed this product contained less milkfat than required under applicable food safety standards.

Official Response and Adulteration Patterns

SMC officials emphasized that their enhanced monitoring initiative aims to curb adulteration practices and ensure strict compliance with food safety regulations across Surat's dairy distribution network. A health department representative provided crucial insight into the findings.

"In most identified cases, low milkfat and SNF levels strongly suggest excessive water addition," explained the official. "This typically represents the practice of diluting milk with water to artificially increase volume. To date, our investigations have not uncovered adulteration with substances other than water in these particular samples."

The municipal corporation continues its rigorous testing regime, with officials committed to identifying and addressing quality violations to protect consumer health and maintain food safety standards throughout the region.
