The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana conducted a raid on a medical shop in Ramanthapur, Hyderabad, for allegedly selling habit-forming medicines without a valid prescription. During the operation, officials seized 120 bottles of a codeine-containing cough syrup and other restricted drugs.
Details of the Raid
Acting on specific intelligence, DCA officials raided SVR Medicals located at Sri Nagar Colony, Ramanthapur, on Saturday. The inspection led to the seizure of stocks of Tossex cough syrup, which contains codeine, and Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus capsules, which contain tramadol. Both substances are known to be habit-forming and are regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
Violations Found
The medical shop owners, identified as V Raju and V Savitha, were allegedly selling these medicines without prescriptions from registered medical practitioners. The inspection also uncovered several violations of the Drugs Rules, including failure to maintain mandatory records, inability to produce sales bills, and non-maintenance of the Schedule H1 drug register.
During the raid, officials seized 20 bottles of Tossex cough syrup, each containing 120 ml. The total quantity of seized cough syrup amounted to 120 bottles.
Health Risks and Legal Consequences
An official from the DCA warned that abuse of codeine and tramadol can lead to severe health issues, including addiction, respiratory depression, seizures, coma, and even death. The illegal sale of habit-forming drugs is a serious offense punishable with imprisonment of up to two years under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. The DCA has urged the public to report any such illegal activities to help curb the misuse of these dangerous substances.
