The Uttar Pradesh state government has accelerated preparations under the PM POSHAN (mid-day meal) scheme to ensure schoolchildren receive safe, nutritious, and quality meals from the first day of reopening of schools on June 25.
Detailed Guidelines Issued to Districts
Issuing detailed guidelines to all districts, the mid-day meal authority director, Prem Ranjan Singh, mandated advance arrangements for food grain availability, kitchen hygiene, drinking water safety, and secure meal preparation systems.
Comprehensive Action Plan for Child Welfare
Implementing a comprehensive action plan focusing on health, nutrition, and overall child welfare, schools have been directed to ensure adequate stock of food grains, pulses, vegetables, edible oil, and other essential ingredients as per the prescribed menu. Strict checks on quality and expiry dates of all food items have been made compulsory, alongside proper storage and maintenance.
Emphasis on Nutrition and Learning Outcomes
Singh stressed that the scheme was not merely about food distribution but also a key intervention to improve nutrition levels, boost attendance, and enhance learning outcomes. Singh has asked officials to pay attention to cleanliness, with instructions for regular sanitation of cooking and serving areas, removal of waste, and upkeep of water sources.
Community Participation and Kitchen Gardens
In addition, officials have been asked to revive kitchen gardens and promote community participation through the ‘Tithi Bhojan’ programme to improve meal quality and social engagement.
Zero Tolerance for Negligence
Officials have also been directed to ensure full compliance with all standards, with zero tolerance for negligence in matters concerning children’s health and safety.
