Waste Dumping Near Madurai Pond Sparks Health Fears

Madurai: Excessive dumping of waste behind Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College in Thiruparankundram has alarmed residents about the condition of the nearby pond. They are now urging authorities to clear the waste immediately to prevent further discomfort and pollution to the waterbody.

Waste Piling Up on Vilachery Main Road

Waste has accumulated along the entire stretch of Vilachery Main Road, extending up to the Karrupusamy temple. Social activist and Madurai resident V P Manickandan described the area as a 'mini mountain of waste.' He noted that the garbage has not been cleared for weeks, turning the site into a small dumping ground reminiscent of Vellakkal.

Threat to Thenkarai Pond

The proximity of the waste to the nearby Thenkarai pond is a major concern. Piling waste could easily enter the waterbody, leading to pollution and ecological damage. Residents fear that without immediate action, the pond's health will deteriorate further.

Residents Complain About Irregular Waste Collection

Several members of residents' welfare associations have reported a lack of regular waste collection in recent days. Balasubramaniam, a local resident, stated that many dustbins in the area are overflowing. The recent rains have exacerbated the problem, causing the waste to emit a foul stench, creating significant discomfort for the community.

Authorities Respond with Plans for Cleanup

An official from the Public Works Department mentioned that they are coordinating with the corporation to implement a 'two-pronged effort' to clear the waste and improve fencing around the Thenkarai waterbody. This aims to prevent future dumping near the pond. A corporation official attributed the slowdown in regular garbage collection to unpredictable rainfall, adding that sanitation workers are currently focused on clearing waste from central city areas. They assured that efforts would soon extend to the rest of the city.
