Campaign Launch and Inauguration
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria inaugurated the Model Immunisation Centre and launched the Pulse Polio campaign at the Urban Community Health Centre, Sector 22, Chandigarh, on June 29, 2026. The event marked a significant step in the city's ongoing efforts to eradicate polio.
Vaccination Numbers and Coverage
According to the Health Department, a total of 34,835 children were administered polio drops across Chandigarh during the campaign. The department urged all parents and guardians to ensure their children receive the drops during the house-to-house drive scheduled for June 29 and 30.
Model Immunisation Centre
The newly inaugurated Model Immunisation Centre is the fifth such facility in Chandigarh. Designed to be child-friendly, it offers dedicated vaccination areas, a play zone, and a breastfeeding corner to create a safe and comfortable environment for families.
Health Secretary Dr Syed Abid Rasheed Shah emphasized the Administration's sustained efforts toward achieving universal immunisation coverage. Dr Sadbhavna Pandit, Officiating Director, Health Services, briefed the Governor on ongoing activities under the Universal Immunisation Programme.
Infrastructure and Teams Deployed
To ensure widespread coverage, 478 Pulse Polio booths have been set up across the UT to administer drops to children aged 0-5 years. Additionally, 1,078 vaccination teams have been deployed to conduct door-to-door visits and staff the booths.
Governor Kataria, while addressing the gathering, stressed the importance of achieving 100 per cent immunisation coverage. He commended the health department's efforts and called for continued community participation.
Impact and Future Steps
The Pulse Polio campaign is part of India's broader strategy to maintain its polio-free status. With over 34,000 children vaccinated in a single day, Chandigarh demonstrates strong commitment to public health. The house-to-house drive over the next two days aims to reach every child under five.
