A young male hippopotamus at Kolkata's renowned Alipore Zoological Garden has plunged his keepers into deep concern, remaining almost entirely submerged in his pool enclosure for close to two weeks. The animal has stubbornly refused to emerge for essential activities like feeding or routine medical examinations, displaying a profound and worrying withdrawal.
A Heartbreaking Loss and Lasting Impact
The roots of this unusual behaviour trace back to a tragic event last year. The hippopotamus was brought to Alipore Zoo from Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha. Soon after the relocation, his female companion passed away, an event that seems to have left a lasting scar. Zoo staff observed that the male hippo became unusually withdrawn and reclusive following this loss. His current prolonged submersion is seen as an extreme continuation of this grief-stricken state.
