Rare Spinal Tumor Successfully Treated in Eight-Year-Old Girl

In a notable medical achievement, an eight-year-old girl underwent a successful surgery at GCS Hospital in Ahmedabad for a spinal aneurysmal bone cyst. This condition, abbreviated as ABC, is a rare benign yet aggressive lesion that can expand quickly, compressing the spinal cord and resulting in severe pain and muscular weakness.

Diagnosis and Surgical Intervention

Dr. Keyur Akbari, a spine surgeon at the hospital, detailed the case. The young patient presented with intense pain and was unable to sit or stand, accompanied by a loss of strength in her legs. The spinal anomaly was identified at the D11-D12 vertebral levels, where the ABC was located. Dr. Akbari explained that such bone tumors account for merely 1% to 2% of all bone tumors, with spinal involvement being exceptionally uncommon.

The surgical procedure focused on alleviating the pressure on the spinal cord and stabilizing the spine. The operation was completed successfully, providing relief and improving the girl's prognosis. This case underscores the advancements in pediatric spinal surgery and the capability of medical institutions in Ahmedabad to handle complex and rare conditions.
