As winter's chill descends upon Lucknow, the authorities at the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden have sprung into action to ensure the comfort and well-being of its animal residents. A comprehensive set of measures has been implemented across the zoo to protect creatures, big and small, from the biting cold, focusing on warmth, nutrition, and habitat modification.
Creating Cozy Habitats: From Mats to Heaters
The primary focus has been on modifying the animal enclosures to retain heat and block cold winds. Mats, straw, and dry grass have been laid on the floors to provide a warm, insulated surface for the animals to rest on. To prevent chilly drafts, wooden planks have been installed strategically around various enclosures.
For avian inhabitants, sheets and mats have been placed on the roofs of their enclosures for added protection. Furthermore, tree branches around enclosures have been trimmed to allow maximum sunlight to penetrate and naturally warm the habitats during the day.
For more sensitive and vulnerable species, the zoo has deployed artificial heating solutions. Heaters have been installed in the enclosures of the owl house, aquarium, tigers, lions, lion-tailed monkeys, and chimpanzees. In a heartwarming detail, chimpanzees and other monkeys have also been provided with blankets to snuggle into. Even reptile houses are receiving special attention, with heaters, straw, and blankets placed in snake enclosures.
Special Care for Aquatic and Terrestrial Diets
The zoo's care protocol extends to its aquatic residents. To protect animals like hippos, gharials, crocodiles, and tortoises from cold water, arrangements have been made to circulate fresh water in their pools, preventing the water temperature from dropping too low.
Beyond physical comfort, the zoo has also introduced dietary changes to help animals generate more internal energy and fat reserves. The kitchen is preparing special winter treats: bears are being provided with honey and jaggery kheer, while monkeys receive nuts. Boiled eggs are being added to the diets of bears, monkeys, and even giraffes.
A Holistic Approach to Animal Wellness
Zoo Director Aditi Sharma emphasized that these steps are part of a thorough, requirement-based plan. "We have made all necessary winter safety arrangements for animals as per their requirements," she stated. Highlighting the comprehensive nature of their care, she added, "All animals are also being given vitamins and minerals along with their food" to boost their immunity and overall health during the challenging season.
This proactive initiative by the Lucknow zoo authorities showcases a dedicated effort towards modern, compassionate animal husbandry, ensuring every resident, from the mighty lion to the smallest monkey, remains healthy and comfortable until the warmth of spring returns.
