We often discuss herbs like Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Aloe Vera, and Basil, but the world of Indian medicinal plants extends far beyond these well-known names. Regions such as Ladakh are home to numerous herbs and plants with remarkable properties that remain largely unexplored. In his 2019 address on Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted one such herb, calling it a modern-day 'Sanjeevani'. This article delves into the wonders of the Solo herb, also known as Rhodiola, and offers four practical ways to incorporate it into your daily meals.
What Did PM Modi Say?
During his address, PM Modi referred to Ladakh's 'Solo' herb, scientifically known as Rhodiola, as a potential 'Sanjeevani' for security personnel deployed in snow-clad mountainous regions. He stated, "Experts say the plant is a Sanjeevani for people living in high altitudes and security personnel deployed in snow-clad areas. It maintains the body's immune system in areas with low oxygen... Which Indian does not want that it should be sold worldwide? I have named only one herb. Such herbs are spread all over Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh." He further urged industrialists, exporters, and those in food processing to promote local products globally.
What Makes It So Special?
The Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) director O P Chaurasiaya explained to PTI, "In Ladakh, Solo is found near high passes such as Khardungla and Changla at an altitude of 16,000 to 18,000 feet. It possesses anti-fatigue and radio-protecting abilities. It can also restore memory and help cure certain types of cancer. These properties make it a wonder plant." He added, "Its leaves are edible, and locals eat them with curd in a dish called 'Tantur'." DIHAR, the world's highest agro-animal research laboratory, has been studying this medicinal plant for decades.
Benefits of Solo
According to experts, this rare herb is known for boosting energy levels, reducing fatigue, supporting immunity, improving stamina, and helping the body cope with stress and high-altitude conditions. Studies indicate that Rhodiola extracts are used as dietary supplements in healthy populations, including athletes, to enhance the body's natural resistance to physical and behavioral stress, fight fatigue and depression. It also exhibits anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulating, DNA repair, and anti-cancer effects, which are beneficial for human health.
