For 36-year-old Rachna Singh, a typical morning in Ranchi transformed into a terrifying ordeal when she awoke pinned to her bed, immobilized by agonizing neck pain. What she initially brushed off as mere poor sleeping posture was diagnosed as severe cervical distress, directly attributed to countless hours spent hunched over her laptop for work.

Singh's distressing experience is far from isolated in the city. Medical professionals across Ranchi are documenting a concerning surge in health complications stemming from prolonged screen exposure, impacting both the younger generation and the working population.

While Singh represents the professional workforce, 17-year-old Ansh recently visited an orthopedic clinic complaining of a sharp, stabbing pain in his right thumb. His diagnosis was "texting thumb" or tendonitis, a direct consequence of excessive mobile phone usage. Orthopedic surgeons report their outpatient departments are inundated with patients as young as 13, all presenting ailments connected to increased screen time.

Daily Influx of Patients with Screen-Related Ailments

Dr. Ekansh Debuka, an orthopedic surgeon, revealed he treats at least six to seven such cases daily. "Among adolescents and young adults, the most frequent complaints involve the thumbs and wrists," he explained. "Continuous scrolling leads to conditions like tendonitis and De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, which is a painful inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. This is often accompanied by cervical issues from using mobile devices in awkward, reclined positions."

For office workers, Dr. Debuka noted that slouching and inadequate ergonomics primarily affect the neck and lower back regions. He emphasized that these problems are largely preventable through posture correction and simple adjustments.

Preventive Measures and Ergonomic Solutions

Dr. Debuka advocates for practical interventions: using an ergonomic chair, a wireless keyboard and mouse, and positioning screens at eye level. For children, implementing strict screen-time limits is crucial. "Be mindful. As a doctor, I can prescribe medication to manage symptoms, but lasting change depends on the individual committing to corrective actions," he stated.

Alarming Trends in Bone Health and Development

Dr. Vinay Prabhat from the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) reported receiving 10-12 patients daily with cervical and lumbar problems linked to prolonged screen use, often without the patients themselves recognizing the connection.

Dr. Prabhat highlighted a more insidious trend: a decline in outdoor activities as children devote more time to smartphones, leading to reduced bone mineral density and impaired physical development. "Parents need to be more vigilant. Instead of handing phones to children to keep them occupied, they should actively encourage participation in outdoor sports, which is vital for healthy physical growth," he urged.

Actionable Health Recommendations

To mitigate these health risks, Dr. Prabhat recommends:

  • Using a properly supportive chair and maintaining an upright sitting posture.
  • Taking regular breaks every 30 to 45 minutes to stand up and walk around.
  • Performing back extension and isometric neck exercises.
  • Ensuring adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D through supplements or dietary sources like milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, and green leafy vegetables to strengthen bones.

The medical community in Ranchi is issuing a clear warning: the convenience of digital devices comes with a significant physical cost, necessitating immediate behavioral and ergonomic changes to safeguard public health.
