In a significant address at the Red Cross Bhavan in Madikeri on Sunday, Indian Red Cross Karnataka unit vice-president B Bhaskar Rao underscored the organization's pivotal role in promoting world peace through the advancement of humanitarian values. Rao highlighted that the Red Cross has provided assistance to millions of people across the globe, reinforcing its commitment to alleviating human suffering.
Peace as Central Objective During International Unrest
Rao elaborated that whenever unrest arises between countries, Red Cross leaders become actively involved in efforts aimed at maintaining peace and order. He emphasized that peace remains the organization's central objective, driving its interventions in conflict zones and humanitarian crises worldwide.
Utilizing Funds for Welfare Activities in Kodagu
The vice-president noted that the Red Cross possesses substantial funds designated for welfare activities. He urged that these resources be effectively deployed during challenging times, such as natural calamities affecting the Kodagu region. This call to action aims to ensure timely and efficient support for communities in distress.
Addressing Drug Addiction Concerns in Kodagu
Kodagu Superintendent of Police Bindu Mani expressed serious concern over the rising number of drug addicts in the district. She suggested organizing a de-addiction programme through the Red Cross to combat this growing issue, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts in public health initiatives.
Expansion of Red Cross Membership in Kodagu
Red Cross Kodagu Unit chairman BK Ravindra Rai announced that the district currently has 350 Red Cross members. Plans are underway to expand membership by establishing new units in Somwarpet and Virajpet. Additionally, Rai revealed that a cancer screening camp for women will be organized soon, focusing on preventive healthcare measures.
Blood Donation Initiatives to Overcome Shortages
In a related development, Dr Karumbaiah, the medical officer of Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences' Blood Bank, emphasized the urgent need to collect more pints of blood. Speaking after inaugurating a public voluntary blood donation camp at Rotary Bhavan in Alur Siddapura, he stated that every month, 500 to 600 litres of blood are required for patients undergoing treatment in Kodagu district.
Collaborative Efforts for Regular Blood Donation Camps
Dr Suparna Krishnanand, the administrative medical officer of the Primary Health Centre, advocated for regular blood donation camps organized by various organizations to overcome shortages in blood banks. She encouraged organizations to come forward and support these life-saving initiatives, ensuring a steady supply for medical needs.
The event was attended by organization treasurer Prasad Gowda and Narayanaswamy, president of Alur Siddapura Rotary Club, showcasing a collective commitment to humanitarian causes in the region.
