Times of India's 'Let's D-Stress' Campaign Aims to Tackle Digital Overload Nationwide
The Times of India has launched a groundbreaking initiative called 'Let's D-Stress,' designed to spark a nationwide conversation about the pervasive issue of digital stress. This campaign seeks to explore the consequences of excessive digital engagement and provide practical, actionable solutions to help individuals reclaim their attention, productivity, and mental wellbeing in an increasingly distracted world.
Collaborative Effort with Leading Institutions
The initiative is a collaborative effort, partnering with the Kochi-based Centre of Excellence in Neurodegeneration and Brain Health (CENABH) as the knowledge partner, along with IIT Delhi and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) as solutions partners. This partnership leverages cutting-edge science and technology to transform awareness of digital behavior into tangible actions.
CENABH, originally focused on laboratory neuroscience research, has expanded its scope to include large-scale public health initiatives. In October 2021, the centre played a pivotal role in developing Kochi into India's first dementia-friendly city, demonstrating how advanced research can foster healthier, more inclusive communities. This shift towards compassionate, community-based care is further exemplified by the 'Udbodh' project, designed by the Centre for Neuroscience at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), which aims to create a supportive ecosystem for the ageing population.
Innovative Self-Assessment Tool for Digital Behavior
As a core component of the TOI campaign, a simplified web-based assessment tool will be made available to readers via a QR code. This tool allows individuals to gain an initial understanding of their digital behavior and focus levels, promoting awareness of everyday technology use.
The results are intended to encourage gradual, practical adjustments that support improved focus, rest, and overall cognitive wellbeing. The assessment tool is derived from the scientific framework used for the Mentacy app, which is rooted in neuroscientific research and behavioral insights. This framework was developed over a two-year collaboration between CENABH and a technology partner.
Scientific Backing and Expert Leadership
The scientific framework behind the assessment tool was crafted by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Baby Chakrapani P S, CENABH director and honorary director of the Centre for Neuroscience at CUSAT, and Dr. Lima Raj, psychologist and project head for social neuroscience at CENABH. Their expertise ensures that the campaign is grounded in rigorous research, offering credible and effective strategies to combat digital stress.
By integrating technology with neuroscience, the 'Let's D-Stress' campaign represents a significant step forward in addressing the mental health challenges posed by the digital age, empowering individuals to take control of their digital habits for a healthier, more balanced life.
