Vadodara Vegetable Seller's Son Becomes Family's First Doctor, Daughter Follows Suit
In the quiet predawn hours of Vadodara, young Prem Tiwari would embark on a daily journey with his father, Rakesh Tiwari, in their tempo to the bustling wholesale vegetable market in Sayajipura, located 40 kilometers from their Chhani home. These early morning rides were far more than simple commutes; they marked the humble beginnings of an extraordinary odyssey fueled by unwavering grit and relentless perseverance toward a singular dream: becoming a doctor.
Amidst the constant hum of trade and the heavy weight of familial responsibility, Prem clung steadfastly to his textbooks, seizing every possible moment to study. A Dream Realized Through Sacrifice
Prem, now 25 years old, has recently graduated from the prestigious Baroda Medical College (BMC) under Maharaja Sayajirao University, becoming the first doctor in his family. Reflecting on this monumental achievement, he expressed, "It's a dream come true." He credits his father for silently battling severe financial hardships and enduring grueling physical labor to pave the way for both him and his sister to pursue medical careers.
Rakesh recalls a pivotal moment when Prem, after completing Class 12, expressed his desire to study medicine. "He was always brilliant in academics. When he said he wanted to become a doctor, I decided to support him fully," the proud father shared. Interestingly, Prem had not initially planned to enter the science stream. While a student at MK High School in Alkapuri, he considered commerce, but his school principal encouraged him to switch to science—a decision that ultimately altered the trajectory of his life.
Father's Unwavering Support and Sibling Inspiration
Prem vividly remembers his father's protective stance toward his education. "When I turned 16, my father told me not to accompany him to the wholesale market. He didn't even let me spend much time at his workplace because he wanted me to solely focus on studies," Prem recounted. This dedication paid off as he earned his MBBS degree just a fortnight ago and now aspires to become a surgeon.
Inspired by her brother's remarkable journey, Prem's sister Arpita, 23, chose to follow the same path. She is currently in the final year of her MBBS at Pramukhswami Medical College in Karamsad, Anand, and is set to graduate in 2027. Arpita credits her brother for shaping her own aspirations, stating, "I saw him study for hours with dedication and learnt a lot from him. When I told my family that I also wanted to pursue medicine, both my brother and father encouraged me."
Overcoming Financial Hurdles
The road to medical education was fraught with financial challenges. To fund his children's studies, Rakesh took out loans and received crucial financial assistance from the Mahavir Foundation, a voluntary organization. Despite the burdens, Prem noted that even after he began receiving a stipend, his father insisted on continuing his work, urging Prem to focus on further studies instead.
