The state of Uttar Pradesh is set to host two significant yoga events along the banks of the Ganga next week as part of the nationwide countdown to the 12th International Day of Yoga in 2026. The programs will take place at Saraswati Ghat in Prayagraj on June 16 and at Ravidas Ghat in Varanasi on June 17, under the central government's 'Gangotri to Ganga Sagar' campaign.
Organized by Ministry of AYUSH
These events are organized by the Ministry of AYUSH through the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY). They are expected to draw large participation from students, youth groups, yoga practitioners, educational institutions, and community organizations. The programs are part of a series of countdown events being held across the country ahead of International Day of Yoga, aimed at spreading awareness about this year's theme, 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'.
Theme Highlights Healthy Ageing
Mission Director of National AYUSH Mission Uttar Pradesh, Chaitra V, stated: "The theme highlights the importance of adopting healthy and active lifestyles across all age groups, particularly among senior citizens. Yoga has proven benefits for physical fitness, mental well-being, emotional resilience, and overall quality of life."
Activities Planned
The events will feature demonstrations of the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), expert talks on yoga and healthy ageing, public participation drives, and activities promoting cleanliness and environmental awareness along the Ganga riverfront. Organizers said the programs are designed to encourage mass participation while reinforcing the message of holistic health, mindfulness, and sustainable living.
Stakeholder Involvement
Officials said the National AYUSH Mission is working with educational institutions, AYUSH hospitals, yoga organizations, local bodies, NSS and NCC units, and other stakeholders to ensure broad participation in the run-up to International Day of Yoga.
