The first-ever Indian solo exhibition by the renowned Chinese dissident artist and activist Ai Weiwei opens its doors on Thursday, January 15. Nature Morte gallery at The Dhan Mill complex in Chhattarpur will host the exhibition. Visitors can experience the display from January 15 through February 22. The gallery describes the presentation as "a focused selection" of Ai Weiwei's creations across various mediums, offering a concentrated look at his artistic evolution.
Signature Toy-Brick Compositions Take Center Stage
The exhibition prominently features Ai Weiwei's famous toy-brick compositions. These works involve interlocking plastic bricks to construct monumental surfaces that resemble pixels. Notable pieces on display include two major reimaginings of classic artworks. Surfing (After Hokusai) transforms Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai's iconic 1831 print, The Great Wave. Ukiyo-e represents a traditional Japanese art genre from the 17th to 19th centuries, known for woodblock prints and paintings.
Another highlight, Water Lilies, offers Ai Weiwei's reinterpretation of Claude Monet's celebrated series of paintings. These works demonstrate how the artist engages with art historical traditions while injecting contemporary perspectives.

Ai Weiwei expressed his thoughts about this milestone exhibition. "This is my first exhibition in India," he stated. "Although there are only a dozen of my artworks, it covers several key points that trace more than 20 years — and almost 30 years — of my creative activity."
