Amritsar Kite Maker Wins Global Recognition After 40 Years

For most, kite making is a seasonal tradition, but for veteran artisan Jagmohan Kanojia, it has become a medium of innovation and creativity, earning him national and international acclaim. His journey began in an unlikely setting—his father ran a dry-cleaning business in Amritsar's upscale Basant Avenue. Fascinated by colorful kites during festive seasons, young Jagmohan convinced his father to take him to the historic Lohgarh area, known for traditional kite makers, where he learned the intricate art.

From Hobby to Lifelong Pursuit

What started as a hobby soon became a lifelong dedication. Over the past 40 years, Kanojia has mastered and innovated the craft, transforming a simple trade into an art form through unique designs and artistic creations.

Record-Breaking Achievements

His work has been recognized by prestigious record books, including the Limca Book of Records, Unique World Records, India Book of Records, Elite World Records, World Records India, Amazing World Records, USA World Records, National Book of Records, Asian Book of World Records, and GN National Records. He has also received honours such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Service Award 2025, the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam National Service Award, and the Shan-e-Bharat Award, totaling around 61 awards.

Despite these achievements, Kanojia feels disappointed that neither the Punjab Government nor the Central Government has officially recognized his contribution to preserving traditional kite making. "I have spent four decades keeping this craft alive and bringing recognition to the country, but official recognition is still awaited," he says. Yet, the veteran artisan remains committed to inspiring younger generations to embrace and preserve a craft that has become inseparable from his identity.
