Madurai's Grand Chithirai Festival Kicks Off with Traditional Flag-Hoisting
The renowned Chithirai festival in Madurai officially began on Sunday, marking the start of a vibrant celebration with the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony. This annual event, deeply rooted in the city's cultural heritage, drew devotees and officials alike to witness the sacred rituals.
Procession and Ceremonial Flag-Hoisting
The festivities commenced with a majestic procession of deities, including Goddess Meenakshi, Lord Sundareswarar, and Goddess Piriyavidai. The deities were paraded around the four Masi streets before returning to the temple for the central flag-hoisting ceremony. Special pujas were meticulously performed, and the flagpole was adorned with exquisite flowers and traditional decorations, creating a spiritually charged atmosphere.
Evening Processions and Community Services
In the evening, the celebrations continued with another elaborate procession. Goddess Meenakshi was carried on a simha vahanam (lion vehicle), while Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Piriyavidai were transported on a karpaga vriksha vahanam (wish-fulfilling tree vehicle) along the Masi streets. Temple authorities organized annadhanam (free food distribution) at special centers, ensuring devotees were nourished during the festivities.
Official Presence and Civic Arrangements
The city corporation played a crucial role by providing essential facilities such as drinking water and other amenities for the large gathering. District Collector K J Praveen Kumar and Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan were present at the ceremony, underscoring the event's significance. Their attendance highlighted the collaborative efforts between religious institutions and civic authorities to ensure a smooth and respectful celebration.
