The coastal city of Kochi is currently awash with vibrant colors and fragrances as the 42nd Cochin Flower Show has officially opened its gates at Marine Drive. Organized by the District Agri–Horticulture Society, this grand exhibition began on Wednesday and will continue to enchant visitors until January 4. Presided over by District Collector G Priyanka, the event is renowned as one of the most significant floral spectacles in South India.
A Vast Canvas of Floral Diversity
Spread across a massive area of nearly 50,000 square feet, the show presents an breathtaking collection of botanical treasures. The sheer variety is staggering, featuring more than 5,000 distinct varieties of orchids and over 1,000 adenium plants. The displays also include exquisite mini anthuriums, classic rose plants, and delicate cold-climate Oriental lilies.
Visitors can immerse themselves in a sea of blossoms, with approximately 40,000 flowering plants on view. This includes seasonal favorites like marigold, dahlia, zinnia, and chrysanthemum. For enthusiasts of succulents and exotic species, the show also highlights moon cactus and a wide array of bromeliad plants.
Beyond Blooms: Art, Gardens, and Expert Guidance
The Cochin Flower Show offers much more than just flower viewing. It is a comprehensive celebration of horticultural art and innovation. Attendees can admire intricate vegetable carvings and stunning floral decorations. The event features impressive vertical gardens crafted using ornamental cacti, meticulously designed model gardens, and creatively shaped topiary trees.
Other major attractions include innovative bonsai displays, decorative ponds, and serene waterfalls and streams that are home to ornamental fish. For those looking to take a piece of the show home, a dedicated nursery section has been arranged where various nurseries, including the notable Indo-American Nursery from Bengaluru, are selling garden plants.
An official highlighted the added support for gardening enthusiasts, stating, "To support visitors, the state agriculture department set up an ‘Agri Clinic' at the venue to provide expert guidance and clear doubts related to gardening and agriculture."
Interactive Learning and Workshops
Adding an educational and hands-on dimension to the experience, the organizers have arranged a series of free workshops at the flower show grounds. These sessions focus on practical skills such as flower decoration, the art of vegetable carving, and terrarium-making. These workshops offer visitors valuable learning opportunities and interactive experiences, making the event engaging for all age groups.
