Dharwad Bursts into Colour as Holi Preparations Reach a Crescendo
The city of Dharwad is currently awash with vibrant hues, rhythmic beats, and deep-rooted traditions as it gears up for the grand celebration of Holi. Across numerous localities, the installation of idols depicting Kamanna (also known as Kama) and Rati has captivated enthusiastic crowds, setting a lively stage for one of the most anticipated festivals of the year.
Festive Atmosphere and Community Gatherings
In neighbourhood after neighbourhood, children are congregating in makeshift tents erected before these beautifully adorned deities. They joyfully beat the traditional halagi, a leather drum, and dance to festive tunes, creating an atmosphere charged with excitement. Residents of all ages are thronging the venues to catch a glimpse of the idols, immersing themselves in the communal spirit that defines Holi.
Popularly celebrated as the festival of spring, colours, and love, Holi symbolises the triumph of good over evil and heralds the onset of a new season. Religious rituals associated with Holi Hunnime were meticulously observed on Tuesday. The ceremonial burning of Kamanna's effigies is scheduled for the early hours of Wednesday, a powerful act representing the victory of virtue. This ritual will be followed by the much-anticipated splashing of colours, a highlight eagerly awaited by revellers across the city.
Political and Social Celebrations Enhance the Fervour
Adding to the festive fervour, supporters of BJP MLA Arvind Bellad have organised dynamic events such as rain dance programmes and pot-breaking competitions on LIC Road. Banners across the city are inviting public participation, ensuring widespread engagement. Similarly, supporters of Dharwad Rural MLA Vinay Kulkarni are hosting celebrations at Shivaji Circle, contributing to a city-wide resonance of Holi's joyous spirit.
Heightened Security Measures in Place
In the wake of recent communal disturbances in Bagalkot, authorities have implemented heightened security arrangements across Dharwad. Peace committee meetings have been convened, and officials have made earnest appeals to citizens to uphold harmony during the festivities. Strict warnings have been issued against any attempts to disrupt public order, with police prepared to take decisive action to ensure a peaceful celebration.
Anticipation and Preparations Among Residents
Meanwhile, anticipating a possible temporary ban on the sale and consumption of liquor during Holi, many residents have reportedly stocked up in advance. This proactive measure reflects their determination to celebrate the festival in high spirits, blending tradition with modern-day practices.
Bhoospet Kamanna: A 153-Year-Old Legacy
While Kamanna and Rati idols are installed in many parts of Dharwad, those at Bhoospet (also known as Bhoosgalli) and Kamanakatti hold special significance, attracting thousands of visitors annually for over 153 years. Located in Mangalawar Pet, Bhoospet is home to striking wooden idols crafted more than a century and a half ago.
The Kamanna idol stands an impressive 6.5 feet tall and 6 feet wide, while Rati measures 5 feet in height and 3 feet in width. These idols are carefully preserved through generations, with a meticulous annual process of dismantling, wrapping in cloth, and safe storage before reassembly for installation.
Kamanna is adorned in a silk dhoti and shirt, complemented by a shawl and garlands made of sugar and fresh flowers. Rati is draped in a silk saree and blouse, embellished with ornaments and similar sugar garlands. The tradition of donating the sugar garlands is upheld by the Hurakadli family, as recalled by social activist Uday Yandigeri, adding a layer of historical continuity to the celebrations.
This rich legacy at Bhoospet not only enhances the cultural depth of Holi in Dharwad but also serves as a testament to the enduring traditions that bring communities together in celebration.
