Odisha Government Announces Major Renovation for Bhubaneswar's Premier Cultural Hub
The state government of Odisha has made a significant decision to undertake a comprehensive renovation project at Ekamra Haat, which stands as Bhubaneswar's prominent cultural and crafts center. This ambitious initiative aims to revitalize the facility, making it more functional and appealing for all stakeholders involved.
Comprehensive Upgrades Planned for Key Facilities
The renovation works will specifically focus on three crucial areas: the open-air theatre, the dormitory accommodations, and the green room facilities. These upgrades are designed to significantly enhance the experience for artisans who showcase their work, performers who utilize the stage, and visitors who come to immerse themselves in Odisha's rich cultural traditions.
The Odisha Cooperative Tasar & Silk Federation, known as SERIFED, has been entrusted with leading this important project. To ensure proper execution, a tender has been floated to select a competent agency that will carry out the renovation work. The entire project is expected to be completed within the next six months, promising swift improvements to this beloved cultural venue.

Local artisans have expressed their enthusiasm for the renovation plans. Craftsperson Ramesh Pradhan, who regularly participates in various city fairs, highlighted the practical benefits. "We often encounter challenges with accommodation and backstage facilities during exhibitions and performances. Enhancing these spaces will not only make our work more manageable but also add dignity to our artistic endeavors," he remarked.
Citizens of Bhubaneswar have also welcomed the government's move. Ananta Dash, a resident of Saheed Nagar, emphasized the cultural significance of Ekamra Haat. "Ekamra Haat is much more than just a marketplace; it is a cultural landmark. The open-air theatre is a favorite spot for cultural evenings. With improved seating and better facilities, it will undoubtedly attract more families and tourists," he stated.

Ekamra Haat enjoys a central location at Unit-III in Bhubaneswar, making it easily accessible to both locals and tourists. Adjacent to the facility is the Exhibition Ground, which regularly hosts a variety of fairs and events. The venue recently featured the Sisira Sarasa event, demonstrating its ongoing role in the city's cultural calendar.
Regular visitor Namita Acharya, an art enthusiast, shared her perspective on the venue's potential. "The lawn and open space within Ekamra Haat are truly beautiful, providing an ideal setting to spend time with family and friends. I have seen the stage but have not witnessed many performances or events there. The open-air theatre is perfectly positioned, and with proper decoration and upgrades, it could become the premier platform for cultural and musical programs. Its development is timely and much needed," she observed.
