Dibrugarh Welcomes 2025: Fog Fails to Deter Hundreds at Year-End Picnics
Foggy New Year's Eve Picnics Draw Crowds in Dibrugarh

Defying the dense winter fog and a sharp chill in the air, the people of Dibrugarh came out in large numbers on Wednesday to celebrate the final day of the year. Hundreds of enthusiastic picnickers flocked to the scenic banks of the Brahmaputra and Buridehing rivers, turning these natural spaces into vibrant hubs of festivity and joy.

Riverside Spots Abuzz with Festive Energy

The iconic Bogibeel Ghat on the Brahmaputra emerged as one of the most sought-after destinations. From the early morning hours, groups arrived to claim the best spots on the sandy expanses. They set up elaborate picnic arrangements, bringing along cooking equipment, music systems, and games, all against the panoramic backdrop of the mighty river shrouded in mist.

"We come here every year on the last day of December. The fog adds a certain mystique to the atmosphere. Yes, it’s cold, but that’s part of the experience. We wouldn’t miss this for anything," shared Bornali Phukan, a local resident, capturing the sentiment of many.

Other popular locations like Maijan Ghat, Aai Than, and Joggers Park also witnessed significant footfall throughout the day. These well-maintained areas attracted families, friends, and large groups of college students, all eager to bid farewell to the year amidst nature.

Secluded Charm of the Buridehing Banks

For those seeking a slightly more secluded atmosphere, the banks of the Buridehing river offered the perfect alternative. Spots like Khamti Ghat and Harey Ghat were filled with merrymakers who preferred a quieter setting without sacrificing the essential riverside charm.

"We chose the Buridehing banks this year for a bit more seclusion, but it seems everyone had the same idea," said Bhaskar Buragohain, a city-based businessman celebrating with friends at Khamti Ghat. "Even with the cold, the energy here is amazing. It’s the perfect way to recharge before the New Year begins."

Fog Adds a Magical Backdrop to Celebrations

Interestingly, the foggy conditions, which had prompted road safety advisories from district authorities, did not dampen spirits. Instead, many revellers found beauty in the misty weather. The fog rolling over the water created ethereal and dramatic views, enhancing the picnic experience.

"The weather is actually quite pleasant for a picnic. The fog makes everything look beautiful, almost magical," remarked Priyanka Dutta, a college student enjoying the day at Joggers Park with her friends. "We’ve been planning this outing for weeks, and we are glad we didn’t let the weather forecast discourage us."

The annual tradition of year-end outdoor gatherings in Dibrugarh, it seems, remains unshakable. The determination to celebrate amid nature's embrace proved stronger than the winter chill, marking a spirited and communal welcome to the coming year.
