BA Vivek Rai, the former vice-chancellor of Kannada University in Hampi, made a compelling statement in Mangaluru. He explained that translating works by renowned writers like Prof Amrutha Somashekhara into English and other languages helps spread the essence and aroma of Tulu culture far beyond Tulu Nadu.
Event Highlights Translation as a Vital Profession
Rai spoke at the release event for the English translation of Somashekhara's play 'Gondolu' and other works. The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy published these translations. St Aloysius (Deemed To Be University) organized the event through its English, Kannada, and Tulu departments.
During his address, Rai emphasized a crucial point. He noted that a single literary work can undergo multiple translations. "In Western countries, it is common for a book to have 10 to 20 different translations," he said. "We should also consider translation as a serious profession here in India."
Preserving Cultural Heritage Through Translation
Prof Rai further stressed the importance of engaging with the works of senior writers and cultural figures. He believes that reading, translating, and occasionally staging these works keeps their memories alive in the public consciousness. This approach ensures that Tulu culture remains vibrant and accessible.
Rev Dr Praveen Martis, the vice-chancellor of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), presided over the event. He shared that the university has already established a Tulu department. Plans are also underway to start a dedicated Tulu chair, he announced, highlighting the institution's commitment to promoting regional languages.
Celebrating Tulu Literary Uniqueness
Muddu Moodubelle, the retired programme coordinator of Akashvani Mangaluru, spoke at the gathering. He discussed the unique qualities of Somashekhara's plays, noting their cultural significance and artistic merit.
Tharanath Gatti Kapikad, chairman of the Tulu Sahitya Academy, delivered the introductory remarks. He set the tone for the event by emphasizing the academy's role in supporting Tulu literature and translation efforts.
The occasion also featured a cultural performance. MA English students from the college presented the Tulu song 'Gondolu,' adding a musical touch to the literary celebration. This performance underscored the living tradition of Tulu arts and their potential for wider appreciation through translation.
