Giant Mural at Khallikote College Celebrates Odisha's Rich Heritage
In a remarkable display of artistic talent and cultural pride, students of the Government College of Art and Crafts in Khallikote, Ganjam district, have transformed a 250-foot-tall wall on their campus into a breathtaking mural. This monumental artwork vividly portrays the ancient culture and traditions of Odisha, serving as a permanent tribute to the state's heritage.
A Week-Long Workshop Yields Masterpiece
The creation of this giant mural was the centerpiece of a week-long mural art workshop that concluded recently. Approximately 50 visual art students participated enthusiastically, working under the expert guidance of Suresh K Nair, an assistant professor from the Department of Painting at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. Nair served as the resource person for the workshop, providing invaluable supervision and mentorship to the young artists.
College Principal Devi Prasad Dash elaborated on the process, stating, "We prepared the plaster on a 250-foot-long sloped wall of our college building, which is housed in the old palace of the erstwhile king of Khallikote. The students submitted their initial drawings in the first two days, and the experts selected the final design for the mural. Professor Nair then guided and supervised the students throughout the execution phase."
Depicting Odisha's Cultural Tapestry
The mural is a comprehensive visual narrative of Odisha's diverse cultural elements. Key features include:
- A massive 120-foot-long boat symbolizing the state's rich maritime history.
- Vibrant representations of traditional folk arts and dance forms.
- Intricate depictions of ancient temples and architectural marvels.
- Elements highlighting the revered Jagannath cult and spiritual traditions.
Principal Dash noted that while the artwork is nearly complete, "it will take approximately two more weeks to add the finishing touches with appropriate color combinations." Upon completion, this mural is poised to become the largest of its kind in the entire state of Odisha, a testament to the scale and ambition of the project.
Widespread Acclaim for Student Talent
The closing ceremony of the workshop was graced by Maleswar Patra, the local tehsildar, and Professor Nair, both of whom praised the students for their exceptional skill and dedication in reflecting Odisha's culture through this monumental wall painting. Their commendations highlighted the students' ability to translate complex cultural themes into compelling visual art.
Earlier, the project also garnered admiration from 26 young civil service officers trained at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, who visited the college during the workshop. Witnessing the students actively engaged in painting the mural, the officers were impressed by their technical proficiency and creative vision, further validating the project's significance.
This initiative not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the college campus but also serves as an educational tool, preserving and promoting Odisha's cultural legacy for future generations. It underscores the vital role of art institutions in fostering creativity and cultural awareness among youth.
