Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot inaugurated the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur and a one-day national seminar on martyrdom in the Sikh tradition at the KLE Society's auditorium in Belgavi on Monday. The event was jointly organized by the Karnataka State Government's Department of Religious Affairs and the Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Seva Society.
"Guru Tegh Bahadur's sacrifice symbolises courage, service, and compassion," Governor Gehlot said. He further stated that the Guru's life teaches us to uphold human values and fight against oppression. The Governor urged the youth to draw inspiration from the Guru's teachings and work for the betterment of society.
Historical Context of the Martyrdom
Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, was executed in Delhi in 1675 on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam. He had stood up for the religious freedom of Kashmiri Pandits, who faced persecution. His martyrdom is a pivotal event in Sikh history, symbolizing the defense of religious liberty and human rights.
