The festive spirit has descended upon Guwahati, transforming the city's shops into vibrant, twinkling wonderlands. A blend of global festive trends and traditional charm adorns the markets, signaling the arrival of Christmas. With the festival just around the corner, sellers are experiencing brisk business, pointing towards a profitable season that warms the winter chill.
Market Buzz and Price Points for Every Budget
Guwahati's markets are now stocked with an extensive variety of Christmas items, catering to shoppers across different budgets. Christmas trees are available from as low as Rs 150 going up to Rs 3,000, while decorative stars are priced between Rs 30 and Rs 500. For those looking to add Santa Claus to their decor, mini figures cost around Rs 130, whereas giant balloon Santas command a price between Rs 3,000 and Rs 6,000. Decorating the tree is made easy with tree decorators ranging from Rs 470 to Rs 1,000. Popular additions like pompons, decorative balls, ribbons, streamers, and stuffed toys continue to fly off the shelves.
"We set up our shops last month, and sales are already better than last year," shared Maneek Borah, a seller based in the city. He added, "Children especially prefer our wide variety of items, which we have sourced from Mumbai and Goa." This positive trend indicates a strong consumer appetite for festive goods this season.
Changing Tastes and Fading Novelties
The evolution of Christmas celebrations in Guwahati is stark, moving from simplicity to elaborate commercial displays. Sellers with long-standing presence in the city recall a time when festivities were centered on church visits, prayers, homemade cakes, and intimate family gatherings. Markets were lit up, with small items like stars and trees being popular among children.
"Today, celebrations are far more commercial and elaborate," explained Niveditaa Bhattacharya, another city-based seller. "Markets are now filled with a plethora of decorative items, electronic displays, and novelty products." She attributes this shift to changing tastes, the influence of social media, and the rise of shopping malls, which have collectively expanded the scale and grandeur of Christmas in the city.
Not every innovation finds a permanent place, however. Last season saw the introduction of electric dancing Santa figures as a novelty item. Despite their innovative appeal, poor market demand has led retailers to keep them off the shelves this year, highlighting how consumer preference ultimately dictates market offerings.
A Profitable and Sparkling Season Ahead
The current market scenario in Guwahati paints a picture of robust economic activity driven by the festive season. The increased sales compared to the previous year bring cheer not just to residents but also to the local business community. The wide price range ensures inclusivity, allowing everyone to participate in the decoration spree. As the city dons its festive best, the blend of traditional warmth and modern commercial vibrancy defines the Christmas spirit in contemporary Guwahati, setting the stage for a joyous and prosperous season.
