Historic St Andrew's Church in Darjeeling Restored

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday inaugurated the meticulously restored 182-year-old St Andrew's Church in Darjeeling, a landmark heritage site that stands as a testament to the hill station's colonial past and spiritual legacy. The virtual inauguration took place during the 15th Kolkata Christmas Festival at Allen Park on Park Street.

A Legacy Restored: The Conservation Journey

The ambitious conservation project for the historic church, located near Mall Road, was undertaken by the state's tourism department. Sonam Bhutia, Executive Director of Tourism for the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), confirmed that the work commenced in 2023 and was successfully completed on December 17.

Detailing the project on social media, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the restoration, initiated in August 2023, involved comprehensive civil work, beautification, and electrical upgrades. The project was executed with a conservation-sensitive approach at a cost of Rs 1,55,31,033.60 (approximately Rs 1.55 crore). The primary goal was to preserve the church's original Gothic architectural character while enhancing its structural safety, accessibility, and overall experience for visitors and worshippers.

The Storied History of St Andrew's Church

The church's foundations are deeply rooted in Darjeeling's history. Its foundation stone was first laid on November 30, 1843, with the first service held in October 1844. The structure faced a major setback when its spire was struck by lightning in September 1867, leading to suspended services.

The church was subsequently rebuilt with contributions from both the government and congregation members. A new cornerstone was laid in May 1869 at the same site. The reconstructed building was ready for use by 1871 and was formally consecrated on May 1, 1873, by Bishop Milman, the Bishop of Calcutta and Metropolitan of India, in a ceremony attended by the lieutenant governor and local dignitaries.

Further enhancements followed, including the installation of the first organ in 1877 and the laying of the foundation stone for the clock tower and belfry on May 30, 1882.

Preserving Identity and Community Worship

Rev. Rupert SL Rai, the moderator of St Andrew's Church, clarified the church's administrative and spiritual standing. He noted that the church is cared for by the Eastern Himalayan Church Council of the United Church of Northern India. While it is part of a Presbyterian organization, it steadfastly maintains its Anglican identity. He also assured that regular Sunday services have continued uninterrupted throughout the conservation period and beyond.

The successful restoration of St Andrew's Church strengthens Darjeeling's cultural tapestry. By safeguarding this Gothic-style architectural gem, the project not only honors the town's historical narrative but also secures a vital heritage asset for future generations of residents and tourists to cherish.
