Hyderabad Families Embrace Indie Puppies Through Weekend Adoption Drives
In Hyderabad, weekends have become a beacon of hope for numerous once-abandoned Indie puppies, offering them an opportunity to escape the harsh realities of street life and embark on a new journey as beloved family members. A growing trend is emerging across the city, with an increasing number of families stepping forward to adopt these Indian native breed puppies, opting for compassionate homes over the hostility they often face on the streets.
This heartwarming shift is significantly propelled by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which has been systematically organizing weekend adoption drives featuring rescued stray puppies. Each weekend, these camps facilitate the adoption of dozens of Indies, ensuring they find safe and caring environments.
From Street to Family: A Swift Transition
Historically, many pet enthusiasts in India showed a preference for foreign breeds, frequently overlooking the virtues of Indian dogs. These Indie puppies once roamed the streets, exposed to dangers such as accidents and mistreatment. Today, they are discovering families, receiving proper care, and being granted a second chance at life.
R Srinivas, a student residing in Film Nagar, adopted a puppy from KBR Park last Saturday. He recounted that his family initially harbored concerns about the puppy's health. "When we brought the Indie puppy home, it appeared dull due to the effects of vaccination. For the initial two days, it was largely inactive and spent most of its time sleeping. However, within three days, it made a complete recovery, becoming remarkably active and affectionate," he explained. The puppy's adaptability astonished the family. "It already comprehended basic habits. Whenever it needs to relieve itself, it goes outside. We provided minimal training; it naturally acquired these behaviors," Srinivas added.
In Srinivas's joint family, which comprises fourteen members, the puppy rapidly became the focal point of attention. "Eight of us, including children and elderly relatives, are actively involved in its care. We feed it a diet of milk, curd rice, and appropriate puppy food. It now sleeps on our beds and follows everyone throughout the house," he shared.
Building Emotional Bonds with Indie Companions
Motivated by the cruel treatment often inflicted upon stray dogs, Ayanava Roy, an IT professional from Beeramguda, made the decision to adopt an Indie puppy. "Adopting an Indie puppy stands as one of the finest decisions we have ever made. They simply require love and time. Once they place their trust in you, they reciprocate with immense loyalty and affection," he stated. "On numerous occasions, I witnessed individuals throwing stones at stray dogs or treating them poorly. After moving to Hyderabad, I felt compelled to offer at least one of them a secure home."
Approximately eight months ago, Roy encountered a social media post about a puppy available for adoption. He tracked the puppy to Isnapur and brought it home. The initial weeks presented challenges. "For the first month, it was quite demanding. Simba was fearful and required time to trust us. Adjusting to indoor life and to both of us was difficult for him. Gradually, he began to feel secure. Now, he is affectionate and deeply attached. He waits for us at the door, follows us around the house, and has developed a protective nature," Roy elaborated.
Meaningful Gifts and Lifelong Lessons
For G Yadagiri, a driver from Basheerbagh, Valentine's Day was an occasion to express compassion. He adopted an Indie puppy at a GHMC weekend drive and presented it as a gift to his grandsons in Shamshabad. "I desired to give them something meaningful—not merely a toy that would be discarded after a few days, but a puppy that imparts lessons in love and responsibility," he expressed.
Since the puppy's arrival, the children have forged a strong bond with their new companion. "They are regularly feeding it milk and eggs, have become very protective, and have demonstrated increased responsibility within just a few days," Yadagiri noted, adding that the puppy has infused the home with fresh energy and excitement.
Transforming Injured Strays into Cherished Pets
For Asha Tampa, an entrepreneur managing a handloom start-up, adopting Indie dogs has evolved into a way of life. Nearly a year ago, she received a call from an NGO regarding a two-month-old stray puppy severely injured in an accident. "The puppy was in dire condition. It likely would not have survived without intervention. I ensured it received immediate medical attention and comprehensive treatment. Today, Cooper is healthy, playful, and profoundly attached to us. He has undergone a complete transformation. He is exceedingly affectionate and shares a special bond with my friends as well. Whenever they visit, he becomes excited and engages in play," she recounted.
Cooper represents the third stray that Asha has adopted. "All three of my dogs were once strays. They merely needed care and a safe environment," she affirmed.
The collective efforts of the GHMC and the compassionate residents of Hyderabad are creating a significant impact, demonstrating that Indie puppies, with their resilience and loyalty, make exceptional pets. These adoption drives not only provide these animals with loving homes but also foster a culture of empathy and responsibility within the community.
