INTACH Mangaluru Organizes Memorial Lecture Honoring Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai
The Mangaluru chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), in collaboration with Gili Vindu of the SVP Institute of Kannada Studies at Mangalore University and the Art Kanara Trust, hosted a special memorial lecture on Monday. The event was held at the Kodialguthu Centre for Art and Culture in Ballalbagh, Mangaluru, to commemorate the birth anniversary of the celebrated poet, scholar, and playwright, Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai.
Celebrating the Legacy of a Literary Luminary
Manjeshwar Govinda Pai, who lived from 1883 to 1963, was officially recognized as Kannada's first 'Rashtrakavi' in 1949. His illustrious career produced masterpieces such as Vaishakhi, Golgotha, Gili Vindu, and Nandadeepa. A polyglot proficient in approximately 22 languages, Pai's scholarly and literary contributions continue to resonate deeply within Karnataka's cultural and intellectual spheres, maintaining their relevance across generations.
Emphasizing the Importance of Cultural Remembrance
Programme moderator Prof P Krishnamoorthy, former principal of Govinda Dasa College in Surathkal, set the tone by introducing the theme. He remarked, "This region has been home to numerous distinguished literary figures, yet their contributions often fade from public memory. Gatherings like this, dedicated to honoring celebrated personalities such as Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai, play a crucial role in preserving and revitalizing their enduring legacies."
Insights into Pai's Multifaceted Work
The keynote lecture was delivered by Prof B Shivarama Shetty, former professor at the SVP Institute of Kannada Studies and founder of Gili Vindu. He elaborated on the breadth of Govinda Pai's oeuvre, stating, "Govinda Pai was a multilingual scholar deeply attuned to the societal realities of his time. His writings explore profound themes of religion, harmony, pluralism, and peace, often reflecting on the lives and final moments of iconic figures like Jesus, Krishna, Buddha, and Mahatma Gandhi. In today's world, marked by conflicts and divisions, his ideas offer timeless wisdom and remain profoundly pertinent."
Interactive Discussion on Literary Contributions
Following the lecture, an engaging interactive session delved into various aspects of Govinda Pai's life and work. The discussion, led by a panel of experts including Fr William D'Silva, a senior researcher and lecturer; Satya Narayana Mallipattana, a retired principal; Rajaram Tolpadi, a retired professor; and artist-filmmaker Madhusudan Kumar, focused on:
- Pai's early life and formative influences
- His distinctive literary style and thematic depth
- The significant impact of his contributions to Kannada literature
- The pressing need to incorporate more of his works into school curricula to educate future generations
This event underscored the collective effort to honor and sustain the rich cultural heritage embodied by Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire and enlighten.
