Jaipur's Walled City Becomes Kite Paradise for Makar Sankranti

Historic Jaipur Markets Burst with Festive Energy for Makar Sankranti

The walled city of Jaipur transformed into a vibrant festival zone on the eve of Makar Sankranti. From the narrow lanes of Handipura near Ramganj Bazaar to the bustling bylanes of Haldiyon Ka Raasta in Johari Bazaar, every corner radiated festive fervour.

Markets Overflow with Kite Enthusiasts

Kite lovers thronged markets across the old city throughout Tuesday. They jostled for space while selecting their favourite kites, strings, and traditional sweets. The area became a spectacular riot of colour and sound.

Key kite hubs including Handipura, Haldiyon Ka Raasta, Kishanpole Bazaar and Chandpole Bazaar experienced virtual blockages due to the overwhelming rush of shoppers. Vendors reported that sales began accelerating from Sunday and reached peak momentum on Tuesday.

"The police administration permitted us to keep markets open until late evening, which proved tremendously helpful," explained Majjid Khan, a trader dealing in kites and manjhas at Handipura. "Many regular customers prefer shopping after work hours, and this time we witnessed exceptional footfall."

Modern Innovations Meet Traditional Celebrations

Traders introduced an interesting modern twist to the traditional sport this year. They brought in the 'chargeable charkhi', also known as an electric firki. This battery-operated device can automatically wind and unwind kite strings with a simple button press.

The innovation makes kite flying significantly easier, particularly for beginners. "These electric charkhis haven't gained much popularity among seasoned kite flyers who prefer manual control," noted Sitaram Jhalani, another wholesale trader. "However, children and youngsters are showing keen interest in these devices."

New Trend: Loudspeaker Rentals for Rooftop Celebrations

A fresh trend emerged this Makar Sankranti season. Several shops began renting out loudspeakers to groups wanting to amplify their rooftop celebrations. These sound systems allow participants to add music and live commentary during exciting kite battles.

"It creates tremendous excitement when you can provide live commentary and banter with neighbours while kites are being cut," shared Abhishek Singh, a resident of Awadh Puri in Jhotwara. He rented a loudspeaker specifically for the occasion.

With clear skies forecast for the festival, Jaipur stands ready to celebrate Makar Sankranti in spectacular fashion. The city will witness a vibrant blend of cherished traditions, clever innovations, and high-spirited community revelry.
