McCullum Tried to Talk Stokes Out of ODI Retirement

England head coach Brendon McCullum has disclosed that he attempted to persuade Ben Stokes to reconsider his decision to retire from One-Day Internationals (ODIs), but the star all-rounder ultimately stood by his choice. Stokes, who retired from ODIs in July 2022 at the age of 31, cited the unsustainable workload of playing across all three formats. McCullum, speaking to the media on Thursday, revealed that he had a candid conversation with Stokes about the matter.

McCullum's Attempt to Change Stokes' Mind

McCullum, who took over as England's white-ball coach earlier this year, said he tried to talk Stokes down from his decision during a private discussion. "I tried to talk him down, to be honest," McCullum admitted. "I said, 'Ben, you're too good a player to walk away from ODIs. You can still contribute immensely to the team.' But he was very clear about his reasons." Stokes, who played 105 ODIs and scored 3,124 runs at an average of 38.09, also took 74 wickets. His retirement left a significant void in England's middle order.

Stokes' Reasons for Stepping Away

Stokes had previously explained that playing all three formats was no longer sustainable for his body and mind. "I want to prolong my Test career and give my best to the team in the longest format," Stokes had said at the time of his retirement. He also wanted to focus on his family and personal well-being. McCullum acknowledged Stokes' perspective, saying, "I respect his decision. He knows his body better than anyone. But as a coach, you always want your best players available."

Impact on England's ODI Setup

Stokes' absence has been felt in England's ODI squad, especially in high-pressure tournaments like the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where England failed to defend their title. McCullum noted that while Stokes' presence would have been valuable, the team has moved on. "We have a talented group of players who are stepping up. But there's no denying that Ben is a generational talent," he added. England have since experimented with several middle-order options, including Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone, to fill the gap.

Stokes' Test Career and Future

Since his ODI retirement, Stokes has continued to excel in Test cricket, captaining the side in 2024. He has also remained a key figure in T20Is, helping England win the 2022 T20 World Cup. McCullum, who also coaches England's Test team, praised Stokes' leadership. "He's a phenomenal leader and a match-winner. We're lucky to have him in Test cricket," McCullum said. Stokes' Test average has improved since his ODI retirement, and he recently scored a memorable century against Australia in the 2023 Ashes.

McCullum's Vision for England Cricket

McCullum, known for his aggressive coaching style, emphasized the importance of having players like Stokes in the squad but also stressed the need for a balanced workload. "We want our players to be fresh and hungry. If Ben feels that ODI cricket compromises his Test performances, we have to respect that," he explained. The coach also hinted that Stokes might reconsider his ODI retirement in the future, though he did not provide a timeline. "Never say never in cricket. But for now, he's happy with his decision," McCullum concluded.
