Mahashivratri Sparks Festive Price Surge in Ranchi Markets

Markets across Ranchi witnessed a significant festive price surge on Mahashivratri as thousands of devotees thronged shops from early morning to purchase fruits and essential puja items. From Upper Bazaar to Main Road and neighborhood markets, vendors reported exceptionally brisk sales, with numerous items completely selling out by afternoon.

High Demand for Fruits and Traditional Offerings

Fruit sellers experienced continuous demand throughout the day, with bananas and apples being particularly popular among devotees. Bananas were consistently sold at Rs 60 per dozen, while apples were priced between Rs 120 and Rs 180 per kilogram, depending on quality variations. The traditional offering of jujube (ber) was sold at Rs 10 per 100 grams, translating to approximately Rs 100 per kilogram.

"Since morning, fruits have been selling continuously," explained Sadam, a fruit vendor at Lalpur market. "By noon, most of our fresh stock was nearly depleted. On Mahashivratri, devotees specifically prefer fresh fruits for their offerings, which always results in strong sales."

Sacred Leaves and Flowers in Steady Demand

Bel leaves, considered sacred for Lord Shiva worship, were sold at Rs 20 per bundle, while individual datura flowers were priced at Rs 5 each. Flower packets remained available at Rs 10, with garlands also recording substantial demand throughout the festive day. Shopkeepers confirmed that sales of bel patra (bilva leaves) and flower malas remained consistently steady from morning until evening.

Puja Paraphernalia and Ritual Essentials

The commercial activity extended beyond fruits and flowers to include various puja essentials:

  • Vermilion (sindoor) and sacred red powder (roli)
  • Milk packets for 'jalabhishek' rituals
  • Incense sticks and camphor

Dairy counters reported continuous sales of milk packets specifically intended for ritual offerings. Temporary stalls strategically positioned near major temples significantly contributed to the commercial vibrancy, attracting steady footfall throughout the day.

Market Energy and Restocking Challenges

"There is a completely different energy in the market on Mahashivratri," observed Sunil Kumar, a shopkeeper at a Shiv temple in Lalpur. "People are simultaneously purchasing fruits, flowers, and various puja items. By afternoon, we had already restocked our supplies twice to meet the overwhelming demand."

With devotional chants resonating across the city, Ranchi's markets vividly reflected the spiritual enthusiasm of Mahashivratri, where deep faith translated into vibrant festive commerce. The convergence of religious devotion and commercial activity created a unique marketplace atmosphere that vendors described as both challenging and rewarding.
