Nagpur to Construct Historic Jain Temple Complex Uniting Both Major Sects

Nagpur is poised to witness the creation of a remarkable Jain temple complex that will serve followers of both the Digambar and Shwetambar sects within a single integrated structure. This pioneering project, located in the Ganeshpeth township, represents a significant step toward fostering unity while respecting distinct religious practices.

Traditional Architecture and Sacred Construction Methods

Spanning nearly 12,000 square feet, the temple will be constructed entirely from stone, adhering to traditional Jain architectural principles. Senior functionary Atul Kotecha emphasized that the building will be erected without using any iron, following ancient temple-building techniques that prioritize durability and spiritual purity. This approach ensures the structure maintains both physical resilience and religious sanctity.

Dual Sanctums and Community Facilities

The complex's innovative design includes two separate sanctums (garbhagriha), one dedicated to the Digambar sect and another to the Shwetambar sect. This arrangement allows devotees from both traditions to worship in proximity while preserving their unique rituals and customs. Beyond the main temple, the project will feature a dedicated prayer hall (Sthanak) and a Sant Niwas, providing residence for visiting seers and enhancing the community's spiritual infrastructure.

Bhoomi Puja Ceremony and Political Support

The foundation ceremony (Bhoomi Puja) was conducted on Sunday with Jain seer Acharya Suvirsagar Maharaj presiding over the event, which attracted a large gathering of devotees and community members. Notable attendees included Minister of State for Home Pankaj Bhoyar, former MP Ajay Sancheti, MLC Parinay Fuke, former mayor Dayashankar Tiwari, and various industrialists and developers. During the ceremony, a detailed model of the proposed temple was unveiled, showcasing its architectural layout and design elements.

Spiritual and Social Significance

In his address, Acharya Suvirsagar Maharaj highlighted India's spiritual heritage, noting that despite global unrest, the nation remains a beacon of peace due to its deep-rooted traditions and the guidance of saints. Former MP Ajay Sancheti described the temple as a catalyst for greater cohesion within the Jain community, while messages from other spiritual leaders like Acharya Prashampati Vijay Maharaj were shared, underscoring the project's broad support.

This temple complex not only promises to be an architectural marvel but also a symbol of religious harmony, blending historical craftsmanship with contemporary community needs in Nagpur.
