A Tradition of Excellence: Recent Award Recipients from Prayagraj
Kalia's recognition is part of a continuous tradition of literary excellence emanating from Prayagraj. In 2023, Prof Neelam Saran Gour, former faculty of the English department at the University of Allahabad, received the award in the English category for her novel 'Requiem in Raga Janaki', which explores the life of the legendary Janakibai, also known as Chhappanchhuri.
The year 2022 witnessed a remarkable double achievement for the Sangam city when two eminent personalities were conferred the prestigious award:
- Badri Narayan was honored for his poetry collection 'Tumdi Ke Shabd'.
- Janardan Prasad Pandey of the Central Sanskrit University, Ganganath Jha campus, received recognition for his Sanskrit work 'Deepmanikyam'.
Historical Roots: Decades of Literary Brilliance
Prayagraj's association with the Sahitya Akademi Award spans several decades, reflecting a rich legacy of literary contributions. Among the earliest recipients was the legendary poet Sumitranandan Pant in 1960 for 'Kala Aur Budha Chand'. This was followed by:
- Amrit Rai in 1963 for 'Premchand Kalam Ka Sipahi'.
- Harivansh Rai Bachchan in 1968 for 'Do Chattane'.
Over the years, numerous other literary stalwarts linked to Prayagraj have been honored, including:
- Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena
- Firaq Gorakhpuri
- Shamsur Rahman Faruqi
Later recipients such as Naresh Mehta for 'Aranya', Amar Kant for 'Inhi Hathiyaron Se', and Nasira Sharma have all made significant contributions to Indian literature. More recently, Daya Prakash Sinha was honored in 2021 for his play 'Ashok Samrat'.
Upholding a Legacy of Nurturing Literary Talent
With Mamta Kalia's latest recognition, Prayagraj continues to uphold its identity as a nurturing ground for literary brilliance. The city's consistent production of award-winning authors underscores its role as a vital center for cultural and intellectual discourse in India.
