Markets across Pune witnessed exceptionally heavy crowds over the weekend as residents enthusiastically prepared for the Holi festival, skillfully blending time-honored traditions with modern, evolving celebration styles. Busy commercial stretches including Laxmi Road and Mahatma Phule Mandai experienced steady, continuous footfall, with shoppers actively selecting colors, sweets, puja essentials, decorative items, balloons, and water guns ahead of the vibrant festivities.
Festival Dates and Traditional Preparations
Holi is being observed on March 2 this year, followed immediately by Dhulivandan on March 3, though some regions across the country will celebrate Holi on March 3. Preparations for the ceremonial Holika Dahan bonfire have already commenced energetically in numerous neighborhoods, with residents collectively gathering wood, dried leaves, and traditional offerings for the sacred ritual that symbolizes the eternal victory of good over evil.
Growing Environmental Consciousness Shapes Celebrations
However, this year's celebrations are distinctly reflecting a growing, widespread environmental awareness among Pune's residents. Several housing societies throughout the city have publicly stated they will either significantly scale down bonfires or avoid lighting them entirely this year to actively reduce air pollution and protect community health. Instead, innovative residents plan to conduct symbolic rituals using lamps, organize collective prayers, or create smaller, carefully controlled fires.
Swati K, a resident of a housing society in Kothrud, explained, "Our society members have collectively decided not to light the Holika Dahan this year because of the alarmingly rising pollution levels in our city. Many people are already dealing with respiratory issues like asthma and bronchitis, and the thick smoke causes further significant trouble. We genuinely want to be mindful of everyone's health and celebrate the festival in a fun, eco-friendly, and completely pollution-free manner."
Changing Consumer Preferences in Holi Shopping
Shopkeepers across Pune noted that while organic and skin-friendly colors remain immensely popular, they are no longer viewed as a novelty or special item. Shivraj Gaikwad, a shopkeeper on Laxmi Road, observed, "Earlier, people specifically asked for herbal gulal. Now it is simply the standard expectation—customers automatically assume colors will be natural and safe."
He further added that customers are increasingly purchasing flower petals, reusable water guns, and smaller packets of color as families consciously opt for shorter, more mindful, and less wasteful celebrations. This shift indicates a deeper cultural movement toward sustainability.
Social Attitudes and Water Conservation Efforts
Residents reported that social attitudes around playing with colors are also undergoing a noticeable transformation. Sneha Kulkarni, a resident of Aundh, shared, "Our society will organize a festive breakfast gathering with music and play exclusively with dry colors. Water scarcity has intensified over recent years, so we strictly refrain from wasting water. We have circulated messages on our society WhatsApp group urging everyone to be exceptionally mindful of water usage during the festival."
Aditya Joshi from Kothrud highlighted how discussions around consent have become more common, stating, "People now respectfully ask before applying color to others. That considerate behavior was relatively rare in earlier celebrations."
Organized Celebrations and Floral Trends
Alongside intimate neighborhood celebrations, large-scale Holi parties are expected to draw substantial crowds to adventure parks, resorts, and water parks in and around Pune. Rain dance setups, energetic DJ performances, and meticulously curated day-long events have become a preferred option for younger revellers and families seeking organized, hassle-free celebrations.
Furthermore, flower vendors are anticipating brisk sales, with marigold and rose petals increasingly being utilized for beautiful, eco-conscious celebrations that minimize environmental impact while maximizing festive joy.
