The Punjab government is gearing up to celebrate the state's deep-rooted agrarian culture with the grand 'Ghora Mandi', a traditional cattle and horse fair. The event is scheduled to take place in Muktsar on the auspicious occasion of Maghi, transforming a vast ground into a vibrant hub of rural heritage and trade.
A Grand Showcase of Punjab's Equestrian Heritage
Animal Husbandry Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian announced that a sprawling 70-acre site in Muktsar has been selected for this spectacular event. The fair is designed to be a dynamic exhibition of equine splendour, putting the spotlight on high-end breeds that are a pride of the region. Prized horse breeds like the Marwari and Nukra will be among the main attractions, drawing breeders, traders, and animal enthusiasts from across Punjab and neighbouring areas.
Minister Khudian emphasised that the Ghora Mandi is far more than just a commercial marketplace. "It is a part of our soul," he stated, highlighting its cultural significance. To honour this sentiment, the government has made comprehensive arrangements focused on animal welfare. A dedicated temporary veterinary dispensary has been established right at the fairground to ensure the well-being of every participant.
Round-the-Clock Animal Care and Economic Boost
A specialized 40-member team, led by Deputy Director of Muktsar, Gurdit Singh, has been constituted and deployed at the venue. This team has a dual mandate: to provide round-the-clock treatment facilities for all livestock and to maintain strict surveillance to prevent the outbreak or spread of any animal disease. This proactive health measure is crucial given the expected scale of the gathering.
Khudian reported that many livestock farmers have already started arriving with their animals, and thousands of animals are expected to be part of this famous market. He also issued an appeal to farmers, urging them to bring only healthy animals to the fair. "If any livestock farmer notices symptoms of illness in their animal, they must first contact their local veterinary facility for guidance before travelling," the Minister advised.
Echoing the fair's broader impact, Principal Secretary for Animal Husbandry, Rahul Bhandari, noted that the Ghora Mandi is poised to be a significant event for boosting the rural economy and fostering trade. By creating a platform for the sale and display of premium livestock and showcasing best practices in animal husbandry, the fair directly supports Punjab's thriving agricultural and livestock sector, celebrating a legacy that is integral to the state's identity.
