Historic Birth Room of Freedom Fighter Rajguru Restored in Pune, Set for Reopening
The historic room where freedom fighter and revolutionary Shivaram Hari Rajguru was born has been meticulously restored after months of dedicated conservation efforts. This significant site is now scheduled to reopen to visitors from March 23, which is observed nationwide as Shaheed Diwas, marking a poignant tribute to India's martyrs.
Location and Historical Significance
The room, located at the Rajguru memorial complex in Rajgurunagar, approximately 45 kilometers from Pune, had remained closed to the public for nearly a year due to extensive structural repairs. Previously known as Khed, this area holds deep historical roots. The approximately 200 square foot structure is of immense historical importance, as it is the very place where Rajguru's ashes are preserved, making it a sacred site for admirers of India's freedom struggle.
Rajguru, born in then-Khed in 1908, was a pivotal figure in India's fight against British colonial rule. He was executed by the British on March 23, 1931, alongside Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev Thapar, for their role in the assassination of British officer John Saunders in Lahore. This connection makes the room's restoration particularly symbolic, aligning its reopening with the anniversary of his martyrdom.
Restoration Efforts and Challenges
The state archaeological department undertook the restoration of this decades-old structure in 2025 after it began showing signs of severe deterioration. Concerns about the safety and preservation of the site prompted immediate action. According to officials, the most pressing issue was a major crack that had developed in the main wall of the room, which is adjacent to the Bhima river.
Over the years, water seepage through this damaged wall threatened both the structural integrity of the building and the artefacts preserved within. Vilas Wahane, assistant conservator with the state archaeology department, explained, "Additionally, the vertical wooden supports of the roof had deteriorated significantly due to age and moisture." The department carried out a comprehensive restoration exercise to stabilize the structure, addressing these critical issues.
Wahane detailed the process: "We repaired the damaged wall and replaced the roof entirely. The new structure has been reinforced to ensure durability while maintaining the aesthetic and heritage value of the monument." The restoration work was executed with careful attention to preserving the original architectural character, ensuring that the historical essence remained intact.
Preservation of Authenticity
To maintain authenticity, the state archaeology department appointed a private conservation agency for the project. This involved a detailed study of archival photographs and historical references before any work began. Wahane added, "The agency examined old photographs and historic documentation of the monument to understand the original design and materials used. The restoration was carried out based on those references to ensure authenticity." This meticulous approach highlights the commitment to honoring Rajguru's legacy accurately.
Additional Renovations and Visitor Impact
Alongside the birth room, a Ram temple located within the same premises has also undergone renovation. Authorities reported that the temple restoration work is nearing completion and is expected to open to the public next month. Wahane noted, "The sanctum sanctorum work was particularly challenging due to its intricate design, but it has been completed successfully. The work on the sabha mandap and other finishing activities is still underway."
The Rajguru memorial complex attracts visitors from across the country throughout the year, especially students, historians, and admirers of India's freedom fighters who come to pay homage. With the completion of the restoration work, authorities hope the site will continue to serve as an important historical landmark. It will allow visitors to connect with the legacy of one of India's most revered revolutionaries, fostering a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle.
