Historic Roshanara Club Reopens in Delhi After Major DDA Restoration
More than two and a half years after the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) officially took possession of the century-old Roshanara Club, its doors have finally reopened to the public. This landmark reopening occurred on Tuesday with the induction of 637 lifetime members, marking a significant milestone in the club's storied history.
Membership Drive and Final List Released
The authority has announced the completion of the membership process and released the final list of members. This list comprises 339 individuals under the non-government category and 298 under the government category. The club had remained closed to public membership for several years prior to this initiative.
Officials have described this as a golden opportunity for sports lovers and heritage enthusiasts alike. Members will now have access to exclusive facilities, including the recently launched clubhouse which offers comprehensive food and beverage services, a dedicated card room, and a modern gymnasium. All these amenities will be available to members and their dependants, with the added privilege of allowing up to six guests per member.
Comprehensive Restoration Under DDA Supervision
The DDA took over the property following a court order that upheld the eviction of the earlier management. Under the direct supervision of Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, the authority carried out a comprehensive revamp to restore the club's heritage character while simultaneously upgrading its infrastructure to modern standards.
During the meticulous renovation process, numerous heritage elements were carefully restored. This included European-style doors and windows, traditional Mangalore-tiled roofs, and intricate wooden trusses. Antique chandeliers and original furnishings were also refurbished to revive their classic charm, preserving the club's historical essence.
Extensive Indoor and Outdoor Facilities
The restored club boasts an impressive array of indoor amenities designed to cater to diverse interests. These include:
- A welcoming reception area and main lounge
- Card and billiards rooms for recreational activities
- A dedicated children's play area
- Elegant dining hall and banquet space
- A well-stocked library for quiet reading
- Swimming pool with modern changing rooms
- Comprehensive gym and fitness centre
- Squash board and badminton hall
- Specialized yoga, sauna, and steam areas
Outdoor facilities are equally impressive and include:
- Multiple lawn tennis courts in grass, clay, and synthetic surfaces
- Cricket grounds and dedicated practice pitches
- Mini football and basketball zones
- A dedicated jogger's park for fitness enthusiasts
Historical Significance and Future Plans
The Roshanara Club holds a unique legacy in Indian sports history as the birthplace of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This historical significance adds to the club's cultural and sporting importance within Delhi's landscape.
Officials have indicated that the response to this membership drive will be carefully reviewed. Based on this assessment, future decisions may be taken regarding additional membership opportunities or further enhancements to the club's offerings. The successful reopening represents not just the restoration of a physical space, but the revival of a cultural institution that bridges Delhi's rich heritage with contemporary recreational needs.
