Sangeeta Vana: Sirsi's Park Honoring Trees in Indian Music

Sangeeta Vana, a one-of-a-kind park in Sirsi, Karnataka, is set to be inaugurated in a couple of months. Conceived in 2023, the park celebrates the deep bond between nature and Indian music by honoring trees that provide wood for traditional musical instruments.

Concept and Inspiration

The park features sculptures of legendary musicians, including Ustad Bismillah Khan, and showcases trees such as sandalwood, rosewood, and neem, which are used to craft instruments like the sitar, shehnai, and veena. Each tree is accompanied by an informational plaque detailing its musical significance.

Design and Attractions

Spread over several acres, Sangeeta Vana includes a musical fountain, a small amphitheater for live performances, and walking paths lined with instrument-shaped topiaries. The park aims to educate visitors about the ecological and cultural importance of these trees.

According to Rajendra Hegde, the park's visionary, "Sangeeta Vana is a tribute to the symbiotic relationship between nature and music. It offers a serene space where people can learn and appreciate the origins of their beloved instruments."

Impact and Significance

The park is expected to boost local tourism and raise awareness about conservation of tree species crucial for instrument making. With over 50 tree species planted, it also serves as a green lung for Sirsi, a town known for its lush forests.
