Satish Gujral Centenary Exhibition Opens at Bikaner House
Upon entering the atelier at Bikaner House, visitors are greeted by a self-portrait of the legendary artist Satish Gujral. This luxury store has been completely transformed by the Raseel Gujral Art Legacy, in collaboration with the prestigious Dhoomimal Art Centre, to host an extraordinary collection of never-before-exhibited paintings and sculptures.
Gujral Within: An Introspection
Marking the centenary of the celebrated artist, the exhibition titled Gujral Within: An Introspection presents a meticulously curated selection of works from the final two decades of his prolific career. As guests moved through the thoughtfully arranged rooms, the soft, recorded voice of Satish Gujral himself played in the background, creating an immersive atmosphere that felt less like a traditional retrospective and more like a personal invitation to delve into his inner world, thoughts, and creative universe.
Raseel Gujral Ansal, the curator and daughter of the artist, explained her approach: "Satish Gujral was incredibly prolific, so understanding his full body of work is essential to editing it effectively. My goal was to break it down in a personal, rather than intellectual, manner so that people can truly engage with it on an emotional level."
A Burst of Creative Energy in Later Years
Discussing the centenary edit, Raseel Gujral Ansal highlighted how she chose to display selected artworks and sculptures from her father's extensive repertoire. She revealed, "He produced a massive body of work in the last twenty years of his life because he felt he was running out of time. His health was declining, he socialized less, and as a result, his world became smaller and more introspective. This inward focus is vividly reflected in his art, which was, in fact, bursting with life and vitality during this period."
Surrounded by Gujral's striking sculptures, Shivani Jain from the Dhoomimal Art Centre shared her observations: "If you spend some time in front of each of his artworks, you'll find that each piece speaks to you in a unique way. That is the true beauty and depth of his work."
