Masaba Gupta Makes Bridal Debut with 'Chardi Kala'
The second day of India Couture Week 2026 marked a significant milestone for designer Masaba Gupta as she unveiled her first-ever bridal couture collection, titled 'Chardi Kala'. Known for her bold prints and unconventional design sensibilities, Masaba brought her signature aesthetic into the world of wedding fashion, creating a collection that blends traditional Indian bridal wear with modern, playful elements.
According to the official description of the collection, 'The journey begins in the sacred landscapes of India before drifting into the blue-green waters of Antigua and the vibrant tropics of the Caribbean. Bridal seamlessly transforms into resort bridal.' This narrative reflects a fusion of Indian heritage with global influences, evident in the silhouettes and embellishments showcased on the runway.
Models presented an array of traditional ensembles, including full-flared lehengas, intricately embroidered dupattas, metallic zariwork, shimmering sequins, and meticulous handcrafted embellishments. These classic pieces were reimagined with modern couture touches such as structured layering, innovative draping, and contemporary styling, staying true to Masaba's reputation for challenging conventions.
JJ Valaya Unveils 'SIDDI' – An Autumn/Winter Journey
In contrast, celebrated fashion designer JJ Valaya presented his Autumn/Winter 2026 collection 'SIDDI,' which explores themes of migration, cultural fusion, and identity. The collection draws inspiration from the Siddi community—people of African descent who settled in India centuries ago—and their unique blend of African origins with Indian cultural influences.
Sharing the inspiration behind his collection, Valaya stated, 'SIDDI began with the idea of a journey, one that crossed oceans, geographies and centuries, eventually creating an identity entirely its own. I was fascinated by the Siddis of India and by this extraordinary confluence of African origins with the many cultural influences absorbed over generations on the Indian subcontinent.'
The runway showcase featured intricately crafted lehengas, contemporary saris, fluid anarkalis, regal sherwanis, and impeccably tailored bandhgalas. The color palette included antique gold, ivory, noir, champagne, deep jewel tones, and rich earth hues, reflecting the collection's narrative of heritage and elegance.
