First-Ever Biodiversity Festival in Sattari Highlights Goa's Rich Tuber Crop Heritage
In a landmark event celebrating agricultural biodiversity, the diversity and richness of Goa's tuber crops were showcased for the first time at a biodiversity festival held in Bhuipal, Sattari. The festival, organized by the Vivekananda Environment Awareness Brigade of Keri-Sattari, featured an eco-friendly mandap where over 80 tuber varieties collected from across Goa were displayed.

At Kalmachi Vhali, Suryakant Shankar Gaonkar from Bhuipal and Datta Shambhu Naik from Priol presented an impressive collection of tuber crops. Chief guest Balkrishna Gawade, a botany professor and researcher, emphasized the historical and contemporary importance of these crops. "Goa and the Konkan region are known for diverse tubers used as food since the hoary past," he told TOI. Gawade elaborated on their nutritional benefits, noting that these tubers are rich in:
