Bengaluru summers are hitting differently these days. When the afternoon sun shines right above the head, sitting directly in front of the air conditioner feels like the only viable weekend plan. But fighting for space in crowded city malls is not exactly a vacation. If you are desperately craving a crisp and cool breeze, rolling mist, and temperatures that actually drop into the teens after sunset, it is time to pack an overnight bag.
Here are eight gorgeous, slightly under-the-radar road trips from the city where the weather stays incredibly kind.
Madikeri, Karnataka
The smell of freshly roasted coffee mixed with cool mountain air is exactly what you need right now. Madikeri is the beating heart of Coorg, sitting high enough in the Western Ghats to keep daytime temperatures beautifully mild. The vibe here is completely relaxed and deeply green.
You can spend your mornings taking a rough, thrilling jeep ride up to Mandalpatti for sweeping views of the Pushpagiri forests. In the afternoon, take a slow, shaded walk through a working spice plantation or head out to Abbey Falls.
Getting there: It is a straightforward five to six-hour drive from Bengaluru via the Mysuru highway, covering about 260 kilometers.
Chikmagalur, Karnataka
Tucked at the foothills of the massive Mullayanagiri range, this town trades dry city heat for crisp, high-altitude winds. The absolute best way to experience it is by booking a traditional coffee plantation homestay. The thick, lush vegetation naturally acts as a massive outdoor cooler.
Wake up early for a breathtaking ridge trek up Baba Budangiri, or take a short excursion to dip your feet in Buttermilk Falls. The days here are pleasantly warm, but the mountain breeze makes all the difference.
Getting there: It will take you roughly 5 hours to reach there by taking a 245 km long drive.
BR Hills, Karnataka
Biligiriranga Hills, commonly known as BR Hills, is a brilliant alternative if you want to swap crowded viewpoints for raw wildlife. This unique forested ridge sits right where the Eastern and Western Ghats collide. The elevation creates a wonderful microclimate that softens the harsh afternoon sun.
Instead of cafe hopping, your itinerary here revolves around nature. Book an early morning or late afternoon jeep safari through the tiger reserve when the animals are most active and the air is coolest. You can also take a short-guided trek to Honnametti to look out over the sweeping green valleys.
Getting there: It is just 180 km away, that will take around 4 hours drive for you to reach the lovely place.
Wayanad, Kerala
Wayanad offers a very specific kind of summer magic. While the plains are baking, this highland district in Kerala often enjoys early pre-monsoon showers that keep the entire landscape incredibly lush and fragrant. The mornings are absolutely beautiful for exploring the ancient rock carvings at Edakkal Caves before the sun gets too high.
Later, you can drive through the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary to spot wild elephants or visit the stunning heart-shaped lake at Chembra Peak. The frequent drizzles and heavy forest cover ensure the evenings stay wonderfully cool.
Getting there: You will need about six hours to cover the 280 kilometers via the scenic Mysuru and Gundlupet stretch.
Yercaud, Tamil Nadu
Located in the Shevaroy Hills, Yercaud is a brilliant pocket of pleasant weather that rarely moves out of the mid-twenties. It feels like a classic, old-school hill station. Start your day with a morning boat ride on Emerald Lake. As the day progresses, you can hike down to the 300-foot Kiliyur Falls or simply drive between breezy viewpoints like Pagoda Point and Lady's Seat to look down at the sweltering plains below. The town even hosts a vibrant summer festival in May filled with flower shows and village fairs.
Getting there: A smooth four to five-hour drive down the highway toward Salem brings you right to the base of the hills.
Coonoor, Tamil Nadu
Skip the intense traffic jams of Ooty and stop a little short at Coonoor. This Nilgiri tea town is famous for a pleasant hill station climate. The vibe here is exceptionally slow and romantic. You can spend hours walking through the manicured tea gardens near Dolphin's Nose or exploring the massive botanical layout of Sim's Park.
For a touch of pure nostalgia, hop on the heritage toy train for a short, misty ride through the mountains. The colonial-era bungalows and quiet upper lanes make it the ultimate place to just sit back and do absolutely nothing.
Getting there: It takes about six hours to cover the 300 kilometers, ending with a beautifully scenic final climb.
Kotagiri, Tamil Nadu
If you really want to drop off the grid, Kotagiri is your best bet. Sitting at a massive altitude of nearly 2,000 meters, it is officially one of the coldest hill stations in South India. It offers a much softer, quieter version of the Nilgiris story.
The rolling tea plantations are practically empty, allowing you to take long, uninterrupted walks through tribal hamlets and forest edges. The town has a rich colonial history, meaning you will stumble upon gorgeous heritage architecture.
Getting there: The drive is just around five hours. You can take the Sathyamangalam route to completely avoid the dizzying bends of Ooty.
Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu
Set on a high plateau in the Palani Hills, Kodaikanal is a bit further away but totally worth the extra mileage. The weather here is absolutely comforting, with nights getting genuinely chilly even in the dead of summer. The town is built around a massive star-shaped lake where you can cycle or walk the perimeter in the cool morning air. Make sure to stroll down Coaker's Walk, a narrow pedestrian path cut into a steep valley edge that offers sweeping, misty views of the mountains.
Getting there: This is an eight to ten-hour journey, you can book a bus for overnight travel, and wake up straight in hills.
