Foreign Nationals Stranded in Kochi Following Flight Disruptions

Several foreign travelers remain stranded in Kochi, Kerala, following widespread flight cancellations triggered by escalating tensions in the Middle East. Travel operators in the region are actively arranging facilities, including temporary accommodation, for affected foreigners who cannot return to their home countries.

Travel Operator Insights on the Crisis

Kochi-based travel and tour operator Indimate Experiences' managing director Hari K C explained the situation: "The Gulf region serves as the primary transit hub for passengers traveling to and from Europe and other western countries. We have four passengers who were scheduled to depart in recent days for their European homelands but are now staying back indefinitely."

Hari, who also serves as vice-chairman of Kerala Travel Mart, added: "Most stranded travelers possess visas valid for three to six months, but they have pressing responsibilities back home. Similarly, people attempting to return from European and Gulf nations face parallel challenges with disrupted travel plans."

Background: Regional Tensions Impacting Travel

The flight cancellations and travel disruptions occur against a backdrop of heightened military activity in the Middle East. Recent developments include:

  • Israeli attacks on Iranian targets
  • Unverified claims regarding a US F-15 fighter jet downed in Kuwait
  • Iranian state media sharing video footage purportedly showing a fighter jet engulfed in flames with pilots ejecting
  • Explosions reported in Bahrain, Dubai, and Doha
  • Israeli bombings of Hezbollah targets in Beirut
  • Gulf nations vowing to defend themselves against potential threats

These security concerns have created ripple effects across global travel networks, particularly impacting transit routes through the strategically important Gulf region.

Mental Health Support Services Established

The National Health Mission in Kerala has appointed specialized counselors to provide mental health services to those affected by the travel disruptions. These services are available to both individuals contacting the Norka helpdesk and others in need of support.

Expatriate Keralites and their family members can access these counseling services 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling:

  1. +91 4712430001 (from anywhere)
  2. Toll-free number 14416 (from within India)

This counseling service was established specifically at Norka's request to address the psychological impact of the travel crisis on affected individuals and families.

The situation remains fluid as travel operators, government agencies, and support services work collaboratively to assist stranded travelers while monitoring security developments in the Middle East that continue to impact global aviation routes.
