In an effort to move away from mass-market tourism, the Goa tourism department is considering freezing the registration of new budget hotels in the state, according to Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte. Speaking about the challenges posed by budget accommodations, Khaunte stated that the government plans to encourage existing C and D category hotels and guesthouses to upgrade their facilities and services to attract higher-paying guests.
Focus on Quality Over Quantity
Khaunte highlighted that the biggest challenge for the government lies in the C and D category hotels. He noted that the inventory of such hotels has surged in recent years, leading to difficulties in attracting guests at current rates. In contrast, upper-category hotels are experiencing high occupancy. By upgrading these lower-tier establishments, they could achieve better revenue.
“We were talking about quality over quantity, and if you see the inventory, the four-star and five-star resorts seem to be very comfortable in terms of selling their rooms at that particular price, whereas in the lower category of rooms, you find people having challenges selling those rooms at that particular price,” Khaunte explained after a lengthy discussion with tourism stakeholders. He added that it is premature to announce any concrete measures, but the government will consult with industry players and the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa to find solutions.
Decision Expected Soon
The tourism minister indicated that a final decision is expected within a fortnight. Meanwhile, the department is preparing for an increase in events in Goa following Prime Minister Modi’s call to host weddings and conferences domestically. To facilitate this, a dedicated single-window system under a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) bureau will be established to expedite clearances for destination weddings, musical concerts, conferences, business events, and other major festivals.
MICE Promotion Bureau
Khaunte stated, “The Centre has told us to form a MICE promotion bureau under the tourism department, which we are already in the process of forming. This will allow us to aggressively market conventions, corporate events, global meetings, and weddings through a single window, benefiting the industry.” He confirmed that the MICE Promotion Bureau will be constituted within a month.
