Gulf Nations Airlift Thousands of Tonnes of Kerala Produce for Vishu Festival
Gulf Airlifts Kerala Produce for Vishu Amid Regional Crisis

Gulf Nations Rely on Kerala Airlifts to Secure Vishu Festival Supplies

The Middle East region has been confronting significant challenges in maintaining a consistent food supply chain since February 28, 2026, due to an ongoing regional crisis. To address food security concerns and stabilize market prices, authorities have been implementing emergency airlift operations for fresh produce and essential food items.

Vishu Festival Drives Unprecedented Demand for Kerala Produce

With the approach of Vishu, the Malayali New Year that marks the beginning of the solar calendar in Kerala's Malabar region, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are experiencing extraordinary demand for traditional festival essentials. This has necessitated the organization of extensive air transportation networks to import thousands of tonnes of fruits, vegetables, and cultural items from Kerala ahead of the celebrations.

Lulu Group, the prominent Gulf retail conglomerate, has recently coordinated the movement of approximately 3,153 tonnes of agricultural produce into the region. This massive logistical operation aims to replenish grocery shelves throughout the United Arab Emirates and broader GCC markets, ensuring adequate supplies for one of the most significant cultural events for the Malayali diaspora.

Specialized Shipments and Festival Preparations

A recent consignment weighing nearly 100 tonnes arrived in Abu Dhabi via a National Airlines Boeing 747 aircraft, with additional flights scheduled in the coming days. These specialized shipments contain essential Vishu items including:

  • Kani konna flowers (traditional golden shower blossoms)
  • Fresh jackfruit
  • Banana leaves
  • Coconuts
  • Various vital condiments required for Vishukkani arrangements and traditional Sadya meals

Most of this produce has been sourced directly from Kerala farmers through Lulu's Fair Exports Division, facilitating rapid movement to retail outlets across the Gulf while simultaneously supporting agricultural supply chains in Kerala.

Retail Innovations for Festival Celebrations

In anticipation of increased customer traffic, Lulu outlets have established dedicated sections specifically for Vishu essentials. The retail group has also launched a Payasam festival initiative, offering consumers more than 20 different varieties of the traditional sweet dessert.

Additionally, customers can now pre-order complete Vishu Sadya meals, which typically include over 20 distinct dishes that form part of the traditional festival feast. Yusuffali M.A., Chairman of Lulu Group, has publicly assured customers of sufficient stock availability and stable pricing throughout the festive period.

Cultural Significance and Demographic Context

Vishu holds profound cultural importance as the solar new year celebration for the Malayali community. With more than three million Keralites living and working across GCC nations—primarily in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain—the festival is celebrated extensively throughout the region. This substantial expatriate population makes the reliable supply of fresh produce critically important for authentic festival observances.

The current airlift operations represent a strategic response to both regional supply challenges and specific cultural demands, ensuring that traditional celebrations can proceed without disruption despite broader geopolitical circumstances affecting food distribution networks in the Middle East.
