Kochi's Kadambrayar Village Tourism Project Set for Revival After Years of Delays

In a significant boost to Kerala's tourism sector, the state's tourism department is moving forward with the revival of the long-pending Kadambrayar village tourism project in Kochi. This initiative comes shortly after the launch of the Vypeen beach corridor, marking a renewed focus on developing natural getaways in the region.

Project Launch and Funding Details

The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) is set to inaugurate the Rs 4.5-crore project on March 9, with Kunnathunad MLA P V Sreenijan overseeing the commencement of construction works. Originally conceptualized in 2009, the project had remained largely dormant for over a decade, facing numerous delays and setbacks.

MLA Sreenijan emphasized the project's potential, stating, "Kadambrayar is finally ready to realize its potential as an eco-tourism destination. The scenic location can serve as an ideal getaway for nearly one lakh IT employees working at the nearby Infopark."

The funding for this ambitious venture includes a Rs 3.5 crore allocation from the state government, approved following a request submitted during the Navakerala Sadas, with an additional Rs 1 crore contribution from the tourism department.

Key Features and Attractions

The project aims to transform the picturesque Kadambrayar waterway, which stretches between Kakkanad and Pallikkara, into a major natural retreat. Key components include:

  • Water-Based Activities: Introduction of boating, kayaking, and angling facilities to enhance visitor engagement.
  • River Rejuvenation: Efforts to clear weeds and increase water depth to improve the ecological health of the river.
  • Walkway Development: Construction of a 1.2km-long walkway along the riverbank, raised by 1.5 meters to prevent monsoon flooding and paved with interlock tiles for year-round accessibility.
  • Boat Services: Planned boat routes between Manakkakadavu and Infopark to improve connectivity.
  • Landscaping and Lighting: Decorative lighting and landscaping handled by the Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company (KEL).
  • Dining Space: An open dining area on a nearby island, accessible via country boats, to offer a unique culinary experience.

Execution and Future Plans

The Kerala State Nirmithi Kendra will execute the Rs 3.5-crore infrastructure works, ensuring robust development of the project's core elements. DTPC secretary Lijo Joseph highlighted the phased approach, noting that boating facilities will be introduced after infrastructure completion.

"We plan to deploy coracles, pedal boats, and motor boats to offer visitors a unique experience," Joseph said, underscoring the diverse recreational options planned.

This revival is expected to not only boost local tourism but also provide a serene escape for residents and IT professionals in the area, aligning with Kerala's broader goals of promoting sustainable and eco-friendly tourism initiatives.
